Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that 355 people were arrested across the country in connection with the June 25 Gen Z anniversary demonstrations, with authorities linking the suspects to various criminal offences committed during the protests.

Speaking during a press briefing, Murkomen said the number of arrests could increase as investigations continue. He stated that those in custody would face charges including robbery, vandalism, road obstruction, destruction of property, and attempted theft. Nairobi recorded the highest number of arrests with 161 suspects, followed by Kajiado with 123 and Kiambu with 36. Other arrests were reported in Murang'a, Bungoma, Meru, Laikipia, and Machakos counties.

The Interior CS said security agencies acted on intelligence indicating that some groups were being transported into Nairobi to disrupt peace. He defended the deployment of roadblocks and security checks on major routes leading into the capital, saying the measures helped prevent chaos despite inconveniencing commuters.

Murkomen commended Kenyans for largely observing peaceful demonstrations, noting that there were no widespread reports of looting, vandalism, or injuries. However, human rights groups and some opposition leaders have raised concerns over the arrests and restrictions imposed during the commemorative protests, calling for respect for constitutional rights while maintaining public order.
