Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has questioned the reliability of Uganda’s weather forecasts, saying he would rather trust his village rainmaker to predict rainfall.

Speaking during MPs’ climate change induction at Mestil Hotel in Kampala, Tayebwa said weather forecasts sometimes predict rain that never comes, raising concerns about their reliability for farmers and other communities that depend on accurate weather information.

His remarks come as Parliament pushes for increased funding and better equipment to strengthen Uganda’s weather forecasting capacity.

Tayebwa urged the government to ensure farmers receive timely and accurate weather information directly on their phones, using languages they understand, so they can prepare for changing weather conditions and disasters before they occur.
