My Take

The government is set to start undertaking construction of an ambitious project to draw fresh water from Lake Tanganyika in Nkasi District of Rukwa Region and supply it to five regions during the 2023/2024 Financial Year (FY).
The regions that will strategically benefit from the ambitious project are Songwe, Katavi and Rukwa regions as well as part of Mbeya and Tabora Regions.
Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ recently the Rural and Urban Water Supply Agency (RUWASA) Rukwa Regional Manager, Engineer Boaz Matundali, said that the water will be pumped from Wampembe ward.
He went on to explain that preparations for the project started last December, when a team of experts from the Ministry of Water carried out pre- feasibility studies and detailed engineering design under the National Water Grid System.
Eng Matundali detailed that pre – feasibility studies and detailed engineering design was done in 2020 in Rukwa and Katavi regions.
He further explained that the team of experts had four options of water sources; including Kabwe and Wampembe wards in Nkasi and Kasanga in Kalambo district. The other on the list was Karema ward in Tanganyika district.
“However, Wampembe was chosen as the best source for the project that is optimum cheaper compared to other three water sources,” said Eng Matundali.
He further said the Ministry of Water will engage the consultant ahead of feasibility and detailed designs as well as Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies and tendering documents.
Across – section of citizens from Mpanda Sumbawanga Town interviewed by the ‘Daily News’ heaped praises to the sixth phase administration under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for its determination to end water woes from the precincts.
“Though we are closer to Lake Tanganyika yet we have been suffering for years due to dire shortage of water supply particularly during dry seasons,” said Esther Mlugu a mother of three.
