The Government of Uganda has rolled out an emergency food relief intervention to support households in the Karamoja sub-region, where a prolonged dry spell has severely disrupted agricultural production and heightened food insecurity.
The relief package, comprising 9,419,610 kilogrammes of maize flour and dry beans, will be distributed to 313,987 households across 480 parishes in the nine districts of Karamoja.
The initiative is being coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in partnership with the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Uganda Prisons Service, the Uganda Police Force, and local governments.
This multi-agency approach aims to ensure that food reaches the intended beneficiaries efficiently, transparently, and accountably.
During the flag-off ceremony at NEC headquarters in Bugoloobi, Kampala, Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja reaffirmed government’s commitment to the people of Karamoja.
“The Government stands with the people of Karamoja and will continue to mobilise the necessary resources to support their recovery and build resilience against future shocks,” she said.
Hon. Sam Engola, Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, urged political, religious, and community leaders, civil society organisations, and beneficiaries to promote transparency, accountability, and peaceful distribution throughout the exercise.
Beyond immediate humanitarian assistance, the Government emphasized its commitment to long-term resilience-building measures.
The OPM will continue monitoring the food security situation while implementing the recently approved Karamoja Regional Development Plan, designed to protect lives and livelihoods against recurrent dry spells.
