Dr Gunini Kamba, Kinondoni District Medical Officer

The government yesterday closed down an International Medical and Technological University (IMTU) for its failure to meet required standards of health services provision.

Kinondoni District Medical Officer Dr Gunini Kamba said they toured the hospital yesterday for routine inspection before they noted that there were several shortcomings at the hospital, prompting the Ministry of Health to close it down indefinitely.

However, Dr Kamba did not link the closure of the hospital with the allegations leveled against its IMTU over the dumping of body parts in an official dump at Bunju area in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam city.

According to Dr Kamba, a team of eleven medical officials from the Ministry of Health and Kinondoni District Municipal Council inspected the hospital before they made the decision to close it down.

Some of the shortcomings noted include lack of permit to run the laboratory, lack of incinerator and lack of proper documentation of the registration of its pharmacist.

He said the hospital would only be opened after rectifying the shortcomings. IMTU came on the spotlight last this week after it was accused of dumping body parts in the outskirts of the city. The Guardian could not reach IMTU officials for reaction.

The government has appointed a team of 15 members to investigate the matter.
