MOSCOW - The last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev turns 80 on Wednesday, sidelined from Russian politics and bitter over the direction his country took after he triggered the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Feted in the West as a champion of democracy but remembered bitterly by many Russians as the man who destroyed a once great empire, Gorbachev is expected to see only muted celebrations of his anniversary across the lands he once ruled.
