World leaders gathered at the United Nations Headquarters in New York this week as part of the 81st UN General Assembly, uniting behind a bold new push to close the global education financing gap. At the high-level "Multiply Possibility: A New Era for Education Financing" event, co-hosted by Italy and Nigeria alongside the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the international community mobilized $3.5 billion in international commitments to support education.
Breaking Down the Numbers how $3.5 billion was mobilized?
The commitments announced on Wednesday were split between two major funding streams. The financing includes $2.1 billion in confirmed and anticipated pledges from sovereign donors to GPE, as well as $1.4 billion in co-financing commitments from development finance institutions, philanthropic organisations and private-sector partners. Separately, GPE also welcomed $400 million in commitments from private sector and foundation partners to help transform education systems worldwide.
This week's pledges form part of a much larger effort. The $3.5 billion announced in New York is part of GPE's larger 2026–2030 financing campaign, launched in 2025 with a target of raising $5 billion for GPE and unlocking an additional $10 billion in co-financing. GPE says a fully funded campaign could transform education systems and multiply opportunities for approximately 750 million children across 96 countries, with projections suggesting it could help place 204 million additional children in school and improve education for about 748 million children by 2030, while training 10 million teachers.

Nigeria and Italy took the lead in convening the gathering. During the event, held on the sidelines of UNGA81, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu sent a video message commending GPE stakeholders for accelerating education financing globally, and noted that the GPE vision aligns with Nigeria's own agenda of improving access and building teacher capacity.
GPE Board Chair Dr. Jakaya Kikwete emphasized the need to accelerate education financing, describing education as central to human rights, security and peace and pointed to shrinking development assistance amid a widening financing gap as the driving force behind GPE's approach.
Education activist Malala Yousafzai also addressed the gathering, stressing the value of collaboration and arguing that global partnerships produce greater impact than isolated national efforts.
Individual pledges also stood out, Italy committed 50 million Euros toward GPE programs and interventions as part of the broader coalition effort.
The financing push builds on progress made earlier this year. Ahead of the event, GPE partner countries had already scaled up domestic education financing commitments, with 44 partner countries mobilizing more than $238 billion in domestic resources for education between 2026 and 2030, a sign that the campaign's ambitions extend beyond international pledges to include sustained national investment.
