The Banyabutumbi community in Rweshama fishing village, on the shores of Lake Edward, has accused a local resource committee of charging Shs50,000 daily for every boat entering River Ntungwa.
The fishermen say the charges are unjustified, questioning their legality and how the money collected is accounted for.
They argue that the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) granted them permission to fish in the river and collect firewood from nearby areas, raising concerns about the basis for the additional fees.
The community is now calling on UWA to investigate the alleged charges, clarify the committee’s authority to collect the money and ensure that the fishermen’s rights are respected.
