Rising Kidnappings Spark Youth Protest in Ekpoma, APC Billboards Pulled Down
Residents of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, were thrown into tension after angry youths and students took to the streets to protest the alarming rise in kidnappings in the area.
The demonstration, which occurred in the early hours of the day, was triggered by recent abductions affecting students and residents, particularly along major roads and areas close to campuses. Protesters expressed frustration over what they described as persistent insecurity and lack of effective response from authorities.
Eyewitnesses said the youths blocked key roads during the protest, chanting solidarity songs and calling for urgent action to secure the town. In the process, campaign billboards belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were pulled down and destroyed, reflecting widespread anger over the perceived failure to address security concerns.
Ekpoma, a major university town, has in recent months witnessed growing fear among students, parents, and residents due to repeated kidnapping incidents. Many students have reportedly limited their movement, especially at night, while parents have raised concerns about the safety of their children.
Reacting to the protest, the Edo State Police Command confirmed awareness of the situation, stating that security had been reinforced in Ekpoma to prevent a breakdown of law and order. The police also appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that efforts were ongoing to tackle criminal activities in the area.
As of the time of reporting, no casualties were recorded, and the protest was brought under control. However, the incident has once again highlighted the growing anxiety over insecurity in parts of Edo State and renewed calls for decisive government action.
