Elements of the Rwandan army supporting the M23 rebellion in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have fired at least one surface-to-air missile, an internal UN document indicates.
According to the UN document, a “ presumed surface-to-air missile from the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF)” targeted a UN observation drone on February 6, without reaching it. It would have been fired from an armored vehicle in an area controlled by the M23, specifies this confidential document.
“ French external military intelligence confirms that the WZ551 type armored vehicle, equipped with a surface-to-air missile system, is Rwandan ,” he adds. Two aerial photographs are attached to the report. We can see a 6-wheel armored vehicle with, deployed on its roof, a radar and missile launcher system. They were taken about 70 km north of Goma, north of Rutshuru territory, by the drone which was targeted by the missile.
An incident that has remained silent until now
Monusco (UN Mission in the DRC) indicates in the document that it is not aware of " any armed groups possessing the training or resources necessary to operate and maintain a mobile surface-to-air missile system " and points to an "escalation of forces "conventional forces engaged in the conflict in eastern DRC ". Neither the UN nor the FARDC (Armed Forces of the DRC) have communicated about this incident until now.
The document specifies that many types of weapons were used by " the M23s and the Rwandan army " against flying aircraft and that they are also in possession of anti-aircraft guns and portable air defense systems such as MANPADS.
