MPS call ultra-modern arena worse nightmare

MEMBERS of Parliament are calling for an immediate review of the decision to construct an ultra-modern arena at Nzuguni in Dodoma, claiming it could create a “worse nightmare” in the country’s administrative capital.

The state announced it was collaborating with the King Mohamed VI of Morocco, who had pledged 100m US dollars to build an ultra modern stadium in Dodoma. But Social Development and Services Committee of the Parliament is now concerned that state officials may have not advised properly the Head of State on the site to elect the proposed bigger and better than the current National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

“I suppose the advisers were not honest with the state leader,” said Mr Juma Nkamia when chairing the meeting with members of the Ministry of Information Culture, Arts and Sports in Dodoma yesterday.

Minister of Information Culture, Arts and Sports Dr Harrison Mwakyembe was quick to defend the government decision saying the major reason for setting up the stadium at the site was a distance factor. He said the government had considered to construct the stadium at Nala suburb some 25 km west of Dodoma town as a major obstacle.

The new stadium whose construction is scheduled to start next month is planned for Nzuguni suburb some 15 km northeast of Dodoma town enroute to Dar es Salaam. It is near the Dodoma-Dar es Salaam highway and Municipal authority had planned to build a modern bus terminal and shopping centre complex.

“All these pose serious traffic congestion. As for Dar es Salaam, when Simba plays against Yanga the road near the stadium becomes congested it is the same experience we should expect for motorist using the Dodoma-Dar es Salaam highway,” the Committee Deputy Chairman and former Deputy Minister in charge of Information, Culture and Sports said. The committee also urged the government to reconsider allocating special funds to improve sporting sector in the country.

Regarding the stadium which are mainly owned by the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi, the committee said the investor should consider partnering with the national service in maintaining most of its stadium similar to Egyptians where state security was controlling most of its stadium.

Kilwa South MP, Selemani Said Bungara (CUF) and member of the committee said stadiums were taking a huge portion of revenues generated after match, unfortunately there is no investments. “Most stadium are userunfriendly since no investment is made,” he said.
