Following the January 15, 2026 General Election in which president Museveni was declared winner with 71.65%, Uganda faces a human rights crisis pre and post elections.
The 2026 General election saw many Opposition supporters mostly from NUP arrested including Human rights activists, Journalists and ordinary citizens who have been detained and charged with unlawful acts such as hate speech, computer misuse act, terrorism and incitement of violance.
However Yusuf Nsibambi a new recruit in the National resistance Movement(NRM) of Gen. Yoweri Museveni says the state is willing to release up to 80 opposition supporters that were arrested during elections
While Speaking at The Radical New Bar hosted by Uganda Law society, Nsibambi accuses opposition leaders of maintaining a confrontational approach that has slowed down efforts to negotiate the release of prisoners.
He suggests a dialogue with the state could fasten the process other than confrontation that the opposition leaders are taking
