Detained Besigye turns 70

Kizza Besigye turns 70 today while still detained, having spent over 500 days behind bars. A former personal doctor to President Yoweri Museveni during the bush war, but now one of his fiercest critics.

He has run for president four times (2001, 2006, 2011, 2016), positioning himself as a key opposition figure advocating for democratic reforms. Now, the same government he once helped bring to power continues to hold him as he faces ongoing court proceedings, with repeated bail denials.

His continued detention on treason charges has reignited debate around political freedom, justice, and the treatment of opposition in uganda.
