Death toll in earthquake in Ecuador passes 413

The death toll from the strong earthquake of 7.8 magnitude that struck Ecuador on Saturday night has risen to 413, said on Monday (18) the ministry of the country's Security Coordination.

"According to official sources at the time killed 413 people are accounted for," says the note ministry.

In the previous balance, released on the morning of the second , the registered number was 350 dead.

Emergency crews tried to intensify on Monday to search for survivors under the rubble caused by the quake, which left a trail of destruction in the country's coast.

Survivors also look desperate way the missing relatives.

International aid began to arrive in the country to assist in the rescue efforts, which continue despite the lack of electricity in some areas of Manabi province on the west coast, the most affected by the disaster, according to AFP.

The earthquake was the strongest since 1979 lasted about a minute and affected six provinces of the Ecuadorian coast, from north to south.

Nearly 100 prisoners escaped from a city jail, said the Justice Minister Judy Zúñiga.

According to the minister, 30 fugitives "were recaptured" and "some voluntarily returned to the penitentiary."
