Dar derby: Who will triumph, Yanga or Simba?
On Sunday afternoon Dar will come to a standstill when sworn enemies Simba and Young Africans cross swords in the latest instalment of the Dar Derby in a Vodacom Premier League match at the National Stadium.
While the focus of the Dar Derby will be on the implications it has on the title race, the importance of bragging rights and pride cannot be underestimated.
League leaders, Yanga despite heading into the encounter with the intention of continuing their good form that has seen them establish a four-point lead at the top of the standings, will still want to reclaim bragging rights having failed to win in the last five encounters against their sworn enemies.
Yanga arguably go into Sunday's encounter as favourites, having not lost a league match since November in a 1-0 loss away to Kagera Sugar. They are enjoying a better form than their nemesis. They sit pretty at the summit of the log with 31 points with their closest competitors – Azam– 4 points adrift.
Apart from last weekend away loss to BDF XI in Botswana in a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round in which they advanced to the first round, they have a strong defence that has kept nine clean sheets in the league this season, by far the most.
The Jangwani side also boast a strike force that does it job well. That gives them the edge in the predictions. With seven goals to his name, Simon Msuva has been on good form in front, Mrisho Ngassa who scored the important away goal against BDF seems to be rediscovering his form. Amissi Tambwe who made a dramatic cross from Simba in the last day of the mini-transfer window in December has also scored a couple of goals.
But far important, Yanga secret and most important weapon is their coach, Dutchman Hans Van Pluijm. In a life-or-death situation, between Goran Kopunovic of Simba and Hans Van Pluijm, I will certainly put my bet on the latter.
The pot-bellied Dutchman has shown remarkable tactical flexibility in key games without sacrificing his attacking football style. With him in charge, the likelihood of a dull goalless stalemate witnessed under Maximo in the corresponding fixture in October is very low.
Nevertheless, History shows Dar Derby has no respect for form. The derby psychological factor can not be undermined as evidenced by the fact that despite performing poorly in the past three seasons, Simba have the bragging rights in this encounters.
Yet again, Simba have had a shaky 2014/2015 campaign as they lie in fourth place, 8 points behind Yanga having played one more game. With head coach, Goran Kopunovic refusing to write them out of the title race this a game he will do everything to win.
Moreover, having been handed a six-month contract that is set to end in June, Kopunovic knows victory on Sunday will massively boost his chances of getting a contract extension.
Last weekend's 5-0 thrashing of bottom-of-the-log Prisons has certainly boosted morale in Simba and is sure to entice more Msimbazi supporters to the National Stadium.
Yanga might have a solid defence but on a good day, Simba have within their ranks a striker force that can easily unlock that defence. In Okwi, Sensational youngster, Ibrahim Hajib Migomba and the unpredictable Ramadhan Singano, Simba fans will have no sleepless night on Saturday confidently sure their forwardline will at least put one or two goals past whoever will stand betwen the sticks for Yanga.
