At least 98 students of Nyang’ori Boys High School in Vihiga County have contracted cholera following an outbreak of the disease at the institution.

According to county health director Quido Ahindukha, five of the students have been admitted to Tigoi Dispensary while 93 have been quarantined at the school.

The students are reported to have started showing signs of cholera days after they returned from their mid-term break.

“We are treating the case as an institution cholera outbreak. We have converted a dormitory into a treatment centre to enable us [to] handle the matter,” said Dr Ahindukha.

He said the county's health department has stationed two clinical officers and a nurse at the school to attend to the students.

Dr Ahindukha also said the school does not have a reliable source of water.
