Housing demands keep on increasing day after day. As the world population increase, the need for housing Increases as well. with the current Statistics in our Nation, almost 50% of the population are youth who are yet to be independent , meaning that they will need what they call a home. Be it a rental or owning one.
Construction of a house requires a lot of materials, blocks and bricks being one of them. They are famously known as SANDCRETES. they can be in variety of shapes and moulds. Solid and hollow forms.
Sandcretes requires cement and sand to be made of course in an appropriate mixing ratio to obtain a certain strength. In order to obtain the required quality, strength and durability on e has to abid with the rules of the game without compromising a thing.
since the demand becomes very high for the sandcrete, today we witness alot of local sandcret producers both in small and large scale to extent that the "standard" and the rule of games become very low. As the result the cement usage become very unproductive and construction costs at large increases.
With the unproductive usage of cement, leave behind carbon footprint which in one way or the other affects the environment at large, because carbon emission in the atmosphere increases and we all know the global warming and greenhouse gases effects.
What to be done?
It is, in one way, the agencies and institutions that are responsible for the control and checks for the standard concerning the materials used in production and the end products that are used in the construction especially the cement-related products should not be compromised.
The population should be taught that famous saying, "cheap is expensive". When you have decided to do construction one has to do it once without major maintanance and rehabilitation within a year or two after construction. At least one has to the maintanance after 20-30 years.
HOWEVER
there is another viable solution which will look into both, the cost of construction and cement usage; as well as the carbon footprint.
This is the new method and approach in Tanzania, as it has been used professionally by the NHC, but not well shared to the public and whole stakeholders in the construction industries. The COnstruction industy still embraces the old ways of using the sandcrete and no one questions themm where they obtain them and if the quality is okay what about the cement usage in the product.?
So the NHC, and the currently researched on (personally) introduced the use of interlocking blocks as the alternative of construction materials which will substitute partially or whole the use of normal sandcrete.
The Interocking blocks not only reduces the construction costs to 50% compared to the use of normal sandcrete, but even in the production mthe reduction of cement usage cut off the carbon footprint by 40% and the cement reduction by 50%.
For a person who struggled to acquire land for construction should not struggle again to obtain the building materials at skyrocketing prices. And this is a win-win situation both to the environment, and the economy of the owner.
Currently I am still going through literatures to divise a way for better usage of the cement and alternatives for construction Industry.
