President Paul Kagame, Acring FIFA boss and CAF President, Issa Hayatou at Amahoro stadium before the start of the opening game between Rwanda and Cote D' VoireConfederation of African Football (CAF) has in a special way showered praise unto the Government of Rwanda led by Paul Kagame and the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) for the endeavors of hosting the biennial event reserved for the domestic talents in the respective African countries.
CAF Vice Chairman Almany Kabele noted;
We (CAF) are satisfied with the preparations. All playing grounds were ready before kick-off. Hotels and other logistics convinced us beyond reasonable doubt. Rwanda has a fibre optic in every corner of the country, so everything is ready and CAF is pleased everything is well in places. President Kagame kept his promise and that is impressive
President Paul Kagame was one of the thousands of Rwandese 13th man contingent at the Amahoro stadium when the host country shocked everybody with that memorable victory over African giants, Cote D’Ivoire.
Calm and composed defender, Emery Bayisenge slotted home the winner from a well worked out free-kick on 16 minutes.
Kabele further switched focus to the fruits of the tournament that was first hosted by Cote D’Ivoire and won by DR Congo in 2009.
CHAN has helped local players to get known. We have moved from the initial eight teams to the current 16. It is time to market players who will be needed at the international level
There are four venues for the three week long tourney in Amahoro national stadium, Huye, Rubavu (Umuganda stadium) and Kigali Regional stadium (Nyamirambo).
CHAN Previous winners:
DR Congo won in 2009 when Cote D’Ivoire hosted the event. Tunisia emerged champions in 2011 when Sudan hosted and Libya are the defending champions, having won the last edition hosted by South Africa in 2014.
Uganda is participating at her third CHAN championships having qualified for the events in Sudan, South Africa and now Rwanda.
At the previous editions, 2011 and 2014 championships, Uganda Cranes did not exceed the group stage hurdle.
