Hon. Daudi Kabanda, Executive Secretary of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and MP for Kasambya County, has publicly confirmed that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba will contest Uganda’s presidency in the 2031 general elections.
Kabanda made the declaration at the PLU press conference today, where it was met with cheers from supporters.
The announcement follows Muhoozi’s recent statements on X in which he said he would “stand for the highest office in the land in 2031” and predicted a 90% victory with the support of his father, President Yoweri Museveni.
Muhoozi, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Son to President Museveni and leader of the PLU, had previously expressed interest in contesting the 2026 presidential election but later withdrew his bid and backed Museveni’s re-election campaign.
The 2031 declaration puts Uganda’s long-running succession debate firmly back in the spotlight, particularly as Museveni continues to lead the country after first coming to power in 1986.
