Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medical system uses different ways of administering drug into the human body. Nasya is one of the important therapies in Ayurveda and in this method the drug is administered through nostrils.

Nasya therapy is prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners depending on the ailment and it is mainly resorted to for the treatment of diseases related to head. Drugs applying through nostrils cleanse the pathway to the head and also open this channel. Hence, they will have direct influence of the functioning of the brain. Nasya therapy enhances the activities of sense organs such as nose, eyes and ears and rejuvenates the brain. It is also used as an effective preventive measure in the anti-aging ayurvedic treatments. Experts opine that Nasya treatment with particular herbs prevents greying of hair and promotes the hair growth.

The therapy seems to be very effective for ailments such as migraine, tooth ache, sinus pain, chronic headache, kapha disorders, cold, epilepsy etc. It is also used in therapies related to various skin disorders and Parkinson’s disease. The treatment is said to have cured many who were suffering from facial paralysis. There are also various kinds of Nasya treatments. Medicated decoctions are applied through nostrils in some treatments while in some others dry herbal powders are blown into the nose.
