Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that the Government of Tanzania has signed a firm purchase agreement for two Q400 turboprop airliners. The aircraft will be delivered with a 76-seat, dual-lavatory configuration and will be used for commercial airline operations in the region.

Based on the list price of the Q400 airliner, the firm order is valued at approximately US $62 million.

“Tanzania is a large country with some challenging airfields, and the Q400 turboprop’s capability to operate at these airports, its jet-like speed, long-range cruise capability and outstanding turboprop economics were key factors that guided us in selecting the aircraft for our operations,” added
Dr. Chamuriho. “The level of in-continent support that Bombardier offers is also very important for us.”

Bombardier’s Dash 8/Q-Series turboprops and CRJ Series regional jets have made significant advances in Africa where approximately 160 aircraft – including more than 50 Q400 turboprops -- are in service with, or ordered by, approximately 40 customers and operators.

Precision Air to Resume Flights to Comoro

Precision Air will resume its operations to Hahaya, Comoros in August after operation review and stabilisation of fleet size. The airline suspended its flights to Hahaya earlier in 2014 while undergoing a strategy review which also involved route rationalisation.

"We understand there is a demand for transport between Dar es Salaam - Hahaya. As any commercially oriented entity, we went back to our drawing table and worked on a plan that would allow us to service the route efficiently with our now stable fleet," Precision Air's Commercial Director, Mr Robert Owusu, is quoted as saying in a statement.

Mr Owusu further explained that Precision Air flights between Dar es Salaam and Hahaya will strengthen the good trade relations between Tanzania and Comoros and that Precision Air will operate three flights per week, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.


"There is high movement of traders between Dar es Salaam and Hahaya. We are certain our flights will be a perfect product for them as we offer reliability and convenience to their business.

Our tickets normally include free 23 kg of check -in luggages which is convenient offer for traders who are travelling with their goods," he said.

Precision Air's flights are also expected to facilitate movement of tourists and experts from America, Europe and Arab countries. This will be a second regional destination for Precision Air after Nairobi.

Tanzania’s Precision Air to Resume Flights to Comoros

Precision Air will resume its operations to Hahaya, Comoros from August 2016 following fleet stabilization.

The Tanzanian airline halted flights to Hahaya in 2014 while undergoing a strategy review which also involved route rationalization.

“We understand there is a demand for transport between Dar es Salaam and Hahaya. As any commercially-oriented entity, we went back to our drawing table and worked on a plan that would allow us to service the route efficiently with our now stable fleet,” Robert Owusu, Commercial Director, Precision Air said.

Precision Air will fly three weekly flights from Dar es Salaam to Hahaya, on Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday and offer passengers free 23kgs of check-in luggage.

The resumption of the Dar-Hahaya flight is expected to strengthen trade between Tanzania and Comoros and facilitate the movement of passengers from America, Europe and the Middle East.

The relaunched route will become Precision Air’s second regional destination after Nairobi.

The airline flies domestically to 10 destinations across Tanzania.

UPCOMING FLEET CHANGE PROMPTS FASTJET TO ENGAGE WITH STAFF

Staff of Fastjet who will, as a result of organizational and fleet changes, become redundant, have been assured that should the business climate change to the better they will be the first to be offered new contracts.

A letter seen from Fastjet’s management in Tanzania also assures staff that their statutory redundancy pay, accumulated leave and any bonuses applicable will all be paid to those who will leave the company and that in the case of crew the principle of last in first out will be applied.

The airline will also provide the affected staff with references to seek and secure employment elsewhere, did the letter say.

Meetings with staff have began on the 15th of September, i.e. on Thursday this week and are expected to be concluded early in the new week.

Reportedly affected are staff from several departments, Administration, Commercial, Ground Operations, Cabin Crew and Flight Crew (cockpit).

It is now widely anticipated that the new aircraft, which will replace the Airbus A319 fleet, is going to be of the Embraer E190 type in an all economy cabin layout.

Other changes already affected are booking fees of 11.000 Tanzania Shillings for passengers NOT using the online system and preferring a sales office while, even more important, will all flights connecting through Dar es Salaam now be bookable on ONE ticket unlike in the past when every sector had to be ticketed separately and passengers had to check in afresh.

This move has been widely hailed as a major step forward in retaining business and increasing brand loyalty.
No specific date has been set for the exchange of the Airbus fleet with the new birds but as and when details are available be sure to read it right here as breaking news.

Former Mango CEO Nico Bezuidenhout looks to pare expenses at the African discount airline and bring the company closer to its key markets
AFRICAN discount airline Fastjet will switch to a fleet of Embraer SA regional jets from larger Airbus Group aircraft as new CEO Nico Bezuidenhout seeks to stem losses by better matching capacity to demand.

The fledgling carrier will also move its headquarters to Johannesburg from London to pare expenses and bring the company closer to its key markets, Bezuidenhout said in an interview in Johannesburg. He took over as CEO last month.

Fastjet will have returned three leased 145-seat Airbus A319 jets by the end of September and plans to sub-lease two. The one it owns will be put for sale. The carrier has agreed to short-term leases on three Embraer E190s with fewer than 120 seats apiece, the first of which is due in Tanzania within two weeks.

Bezuidenhout took over after predecessor Ed Winter quit following clashes with investor Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the EasyJet founder, who had demanded cost cuts. The move to Johannesburg will be made in stages following consultation with the workforce, starting with the commercial department by the end of 2016. It should reduce head-office expenses by as much as 35%.

"Right now it’s about stabilisation,’’ Bezuidenhout said. "The right steps are being taken and it’s going in the right direction."

Based on current projections Fastjet should break even in terms of its cash flow from the fourth quarter of next year, he said. The company, which has yet to report an annual profit and lost £16.9m in 2015, said in June it remained cash flow negative, and raised £15.2m in a share sale last month to cover working capital.

The initial batch of Embraer planes will be taken on so-called wet-lease terms, including pilots, cabin crew and maintenance staff, so that they can start flying immediately. Bezuidenhout said he would probably replace them with aircraft of the same type on standard leases and manned by Fastjet employees by April.

"I can get wheels on the ground now,’’ he said. "Every flight that takes off that you are only selling half the seats, you are losing money.’’

Load factor boost

The switch from A319s should lift FastJet’s load factor from the 47% reported in June to above 70%, Bezuidenhout said.

While that is a healthier occupancy level, the majority of the world’s low-cost airlines prefer the greater efficiencies of Airbus and Boeing jetliners. Many costs also remain fixed whatever the size of plane.

Bezuidenhout is also making changes to FastJet’s route network, cutting frequencies on the route from the Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam — its main operating base — to Zanzibar, and replacing a daily flight from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi, Kenya, with a twice-weekly service from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro.

The company has begun consultation on restructuring its workforce and is targeting a reduction in numbers of the most costly expatriate staff, such as pilots, the CEO said.

Sales should benefit from switching to a new mobile-payment platform and adopting the Amadeus distribution system, which will make Fastjet flights available to at least 50% of travel agents in Africa. The carrier is also planning to finally activate an existing sales agreement with Dubai-based long-haul giant Emirates.

Stabilisation can be achieved without additional capital, and further funds will only be sought for expansion, possibly from the end of next year, Bezuidenhout said.

Growth plans would focus initially on SA, the continent’s largest market and one the former CEO of South African Airways’s Mango Airlines arm knows well.

Tanzania’s leading Domestic Airline Precision Air has resumed its operations to HAHAYA Comoros today 27th of September 2016. The flight departed from Dar Es Salaam at 10:00am and arrived in the Comoros at 11:50am.

Precision Air suspended its flights to HAHAYA earlier in 2014 and announced to resume the flights early in August this year.

Commenting on the resumption Precision Air’s Commercial Director Mr. Robert Owusu said Precision Air is set to offer reliable air services between Tanzania and Comoro that will speed up trade and movement between the two countries.

‘Our flights will operate every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, these frequencies are designed to cater for traders, government officials and leisure travel. Based on the market dynamics we will add more frequency later.’ Mr Owusu added.

‘We are happy to resume the flights as we promised, this is our 13th destination in general and our second regional route. We are looking at creating a network that will enable passengers to connect easily with their travels within East Africa, Africa and worldwide. Already we have the best connection network in place and we will work tirelessly to meet the world travel market demands‘ Mr. Owusu explained further.

Precision Air as the only IATA member in Tanzania enables passengers to book through their onward tickets on other international flights. Domestically Precision Air flies to 11 destinations,from its main hub Dar es Salaam Precision Air flies to Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Bukoba, Musoma, Tabora, Kigoma, Mtwara, Zanzibar and Pemba.

COMPETITION SET TO INCREASE IN THE TANZANIAN SKIES

The arrival yesterday of the second Bombardier Q400NG in Dar es Salaam went almost unnoticed, completing the first order for new aircraft Tanzania has placed in decades. A few months ago, after an expeditious review of the national airline’s operations and needs to facilitate a revival, had the Tanzanian government ordered two of the most advanced turboprop aircraft on the market, the Bombardier Q400NextGen.

The two 76 seater aircraft with a single cabin all economy layout will be deployed primarily for domestic services across the sprawling East African nation to allow Air Tanzania not only to increase frequencies on key routes out of Dar es Salaam but also to resume services to a number of other airports to which the airline had to halt operations due to lack of serviceable aircraft.

It is here where Air Tanzania will have to compete with Precision Air which operates a fleet of ATR 42 and ATR 72 turboprops and enjoyed a near monopoly on several domestic routes. However, for destinations like Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Mwanza and Mbeya will local rival Fastjet, presently undergoing a restructuring and awaiting a major fleet change, be the one to beat, not just on the level of fares but also vis a vis on time performance and offering multiple daily services to these domestic destinations.

The two Q400NG’s join a Bombardier sister ship of Q300 make, bringing the fleet to three aircraft for the time being. However, government sources have already intimated that a further two aircraft orders are under consideration for the first half of 2017, likely to be larger aircraft and very likely also to be of Bombardier make. The most likely choice for those orders could be the CRJ900NG, even though Bombardier might be keen to sell the more advanced C-Series, an aircraft with the arguably best operating economics in its class.

Today, Wednesday, will President Magufuli officially inaugurate the two new aircraft in a ceremony at the Julius Nyerere International Airport, when the two planes are also expected to be given names.

Meanwhile has the Minister of Transport, when a few days ago introducing the new Board of Directors and the new CEO to the public, given them a stern warning that they will have six months to turn the fortunes of the airline around. In the past were both incompetence as well as corrupt practices by senior management leading to a series of suspensions and sackings, leaving the airline debt ridden and its few remaining assets under constant threat by debt collections action on behalf of creditors. It was probably for that reason that the new aircraft have not been put on the asset registry of the airline but will be owned by another state corporation, leaving the new birds beyond reach of auctioneers.

Will the arrival of the two new aircraft mark a new beginning for Air Tanzania? As always only time will tell how a new team at the helm will perform vis a vis operational quality and financial prudence to secure the long term survival of the previously moribund national airline.

Bombardier has with this delivery also increased its African footprint with over 125 aircraft in service, 40 of which are Q400NG’s flying for among others RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines and Asky.

Fastjet PLC (LON:FJET) has sold its solely owned Airbus A319 for US$8mln to help shore up its finances while it undertakes a root and branch restructuring.

The buyer, Avtrade Limited, will pay US$8mln cash with a 10% deposit payable on signature of the agreement and the balance on delivery.

New chief executive Nico Bezuidenhout’s recovery plan is to reduce the size of the fleet and switch to smaller aircraft from A319s.

This will reduce fuel, maintenance, handling and navigation charges by 15%.

The replacement fleet will initially be arranged through short term wet leases (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) to be superseded by dry leases (aircraft only) in the second half of next year.

Bezuidenhout said the disposal was an important step in the airline’s stabilisation plan and its move towards a more appropriate size of fleet.

“It's early days but the plan is progressing well and the money raised from this sale will be used to drive its continued implementation."
