Unknown assailants broke into the Bank of Uganda headquarters in Kampala and stole seven laptops in a carefully executed overnight operation that has triggered a major security investigation.
The incident occurred at the central bank’s head office located on Plot 45, Kampala Road near City Square and was discovered early Monday morning.

In a public statement, the bank confirmed that there had been an “incident of unlawful entry” during the night, in which seven laptop computers were stolen.
According to preliminary findings reported by the Daily Monitor, the attackers targeted offices within the commercial section of the bank and are suspected to have had inside assistance. Investigators believe the assailants colluded with some staff members and elements of the security team, enabling them to access the premises without forced entry.
According to the Daily Monitor, The suspects allegedly used duplicated keys to gain entry through a gate opposite City Square, moved into the building, and stayed inside for nearly three hours before leaving with the laptops. Their access allowed them to disable internet connectivity, which is believed to have facilitated the operation.
Further details indicate that, besides the laptops, the assailants also made away with critical security equipment, including a CCTV server and an internet router reportedly valued at about Shs50 million. However, they were unable to access the bank’s cash safe despite attempts to locate keys to the strong room- Daily Monitor reports
Security footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows about five individuals involved in the break-in. Some CCTV cameras and office doors were vandalised during the operation.
According to the Nile post, the break-in has prompted a joint security investigation involving multiple agencies. The response has included a citywide crackdown, particularly in downtown Kampala arcades, where several suspects have been arrested.
Police teams, including officers from Central Police Station Kampala, visited the scene with sniffer dogs, which traced a scent trail to buildings in the downtown area, including locations around Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza. This led to intelligence-led operations in which more than 20 suspects were arrested and some items recovered to aid investigations.
Despite the breach, the Bank of Uganda has reassured the public that its core operations and financial systems were not affected and that normal business continues.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the break-in, including the extent of internal involvement and to recover the stolen equipment.
