Arusha is a 'city' situated in Tanzania's northen region. As of now, it has a population of roughly half a million people.
In my view, Arusha is a city that has the potential of being Tanzania's most economically significant city, surpassing Dar es salaam and possibly even Kenya's Nairobi.
Arusha is a major international diplomatic hub. It hosts the EAC headquarters and is also the proposed seat of the African Court of Justice, the AU's apex judicial organ.
Arusha's service sector should now be rivalring Nairobi's, fifty three years down the lane! World class hotels, shopping malls should be the order of the day! It is at the centre of the northern tourism circuit, thanks to its strategic location close to the Kilimanjaro and even the Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
Some stakeholders have argued that the government should have first built a major international airport there before even ugrading Dar's JNIA.
Air Tanzania should be headquartered in this airport and should play a major role in bringing tourists directly into the country, instead of the current situation where many land at Kenya's JKIA and then cross over to Tanzania. Mark you, air fares are a significant chunk of a tourists total budget.
Arusha also has vast untapped potential in the gemstones sector, and some say that it should be 'Africa's gemstone hub'
In the Agricultural sector, Arusha has few rivals in Tanzania. Horticulture is flourishing, and the aforementioned international airport would have been a major catalyst for tea and flower exports.
Arusha is also sorrounded by major urban centres (eg Nairobi to the north and Moshi to the east), unlike her sister-city of Dar es salaam. This could be a major catalyst for growth of a throbbing metropolis.
In terms of education, the city has been selected to host the multi million dollar Aga Khan University.
In my view, the government should stop concentrating everything in Dar es salaam. Other cities like Arusha, Zanzibar, Mwanza, Mbeya and Dodoma also have enormous potential.
As a sign of commitment to this course, the government should order all its offices move to Dodoma (including the state house, court of appeal, ministries, government agencies and parastatals) in a phased manner between 2015 and 2020. It should also devolve more powers to the regional governments in a manner similar to Kenya's or South Africa's.
I am not from Arusha myself, neither am I a mchagga or a mpare or a maasai.
I just see that city for what it can be.
