Arsenal Football Club is delighted to confirm that Japanese forward Ryo Miyaichi will be joining the Club in January 2011. Everyone associated with the Club wishes Ryo, 18, well in the forthcoming All Japan High School Soccer Tournament, where he is representing Chukyodai Chuyko High School. Once the national championships are concluded, Ryo will join up with his new team-mates in London.
Arsenal Manager Arsène Wenger said: "I am delighted Ryo will be joining us in the New Year. "He trialled with us in the summer and has raw ability which has attracted many clubs around the world. "I look forward to helping him fulfil his potential here at Arsenal."
A DEFIANT Cesc Fabregas last night insisted: "Beating Barcelona is not mission impossible." The Emirates skipper is adamant Arsenal can overcome the Spanish giants to keep their Champions League dream alive. That's even though it was Barca who dumped Arsene Wenger's men out of the competition last season after a 4-1 masterclass at the Nou Camp.Fabregas believes this time it can be different, saying: "This is not some mission impossible."We can win this. Barcelona are not unbeatable. If they were invincible, they would win the Champions League every year.
"Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have knocked them out in recent years. "Maybe it's our turn now - and why not? "If we want to be champions of Europe, we have to be able to beat anyone and everyone - and that includes Barca."
I KNOW what everyone's saying... that it's all over for Arsenal in the Champions League now we've been drawn against Barcelona. That Barca are the best team in the world and we don't have a chance. That Barca knocked us out last season so they will knock us out again this time too. I am very sorry but I just don't see it like that. My attitude is 'Why can't we beat them?' Yes OK. I am the captain of Arsenal so you would expect me to say that even if I didn't truly believe it. But I definitely do believe we can come out on top. So does the boss, so do the rest of the players. And if we didn't have that belief, well we shouldn't be in professional football. It will be tough but really, this is not mission impossible.
Don't underestimate us. We are a very good team and if we play well we will have a very good chance. Barcelona are not unbeatable. If they were invincible they would win the Champions League every year. But the history books show they have won it twice in the last 18 years. Last year it was Jose Mourinho and Inter Milan who put them out. How many people expected that? That game was supposed to be a formality too. Except it wasn't. And it was Inter NOT Barca who were crowned champions in Madrid. In 2008 Manchester United knocked Barcelona out; the season before it was Liverpool and Chelsea have put them out too.
So Arsenal can do it. Maybe it's our turn now. Why should we be afraid? You must acknowledge their quality, respect them, prepare for them. But there is no room for fear. We must face them with the positive attitude and mentality that we can go out against them and win. And last year's experiences against them can actually help us.
We were 2-0 down at the Emirates and looked dead. Even I didn't imagine we could come back from that. But we did and I will remember that game for the rest of my life. We showed such incredible spirit and we rallied brilliantly to make it 2-2 in what everyone said was a great, great game of football.
Not many teams come back like that against a team of such great quality so we should take a lot of encouragement from that. It was an amazing experience, one of the best of my career, especially converting that late penalty to level it all. The only bad thing was getting injured and not playing again until the World Cup. And it's true Barca were the better team in the second leg, they were brilliant, we could not compete. But we have learned from it. There are times when you don't see the ball against them. They keep it so well, move it so well, use it so well. So you have to be patient and you have to be disciplined. When you are in possession, you must ensure you keep it. It could be a long time before you get it back. At this knockout stage of the competition there's little room for mistakes. Get it wrong now in the Champions League and you are in trouble - and that goes for Barcelona just as much as it does for Arsenal. Which is why my heart lifted when I heard the draw, it didn't sink. I'm really looking forward to it. They are such a great team and it will be a great contest, the best tie of the round. And, for me, it has that extra-special personal connection. If we want to be champions of Europe we have to be able to beat anyone and everyone - and that includes Barca.
Lukasz Fabianski and Abou Duaby will return to the Arsenal squad for the top-of-the-table clash with Chelsea on Monday. Speaking to TV Online on Wednesday, Arsène Wenger revealed that the pair would have been involved against Stoke last Saturday if that game had not been postponed due to snow. The extra time has allowed Fabianski to completely recover from the hip injury that kept him out at Manchester United the previous Monday. Diaby has been training for sometime following his ankle problem but he has not figured in the first-team since October 16.
The postponement has also allowed Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas to move closer to full match-fitness. However Wenger admitted he will be without Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles), Kieran Gibbs (ankle) and Manuel Almunia (ankle) until the New Year. He believes the Englishman should return at the start of next month, the Belgian towards the end. "We have everybody back," said Wenger. "We had them in the squad for Stoke - Diaby, Fabregas, Van Persie. Fabianski too.
"They have had one more week to prepare for this game and build up their fitness. That will have helped them of course. "So overall we miss only Vermaelen, Almunia and Kieran Gibbs now. They will not be back in the shortterm - over Christmas - but everybody else is available." When asked for a time-scale for the Belgian, the manager was understandably wary given the centre back has been absent since August 28.
"I would rather say late January," said Wenger. "He is short on fitness and we have to build it up. That will take three to four weeks. He has started now and the signs are good. But I have been hit so many times with backlash that I am very cautious with Vermaelen. "However Gibbs should be available at the beginning of January."
Marouane Chamakh believes Arsenal need to beat Chelsea this weekend as much for their own mental state as for the three points that will keep the north Londoners above their title rivals.
Arsene Wenger believes Monday night's Barclays Premier League clash with Chelsea will play a critical role in defining Arsenal's season. The Gunners have already endured defeats at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford this term and Wenger insists their response to those setbacks will be key to their title aspirations. They enter Monday's showdown at Emirates Stadium on the receiving end of five successive defeats in the fixture, leaking 13 goals in the process.
"Of course this is a must-win game," the Frenchman said. "We have mixed feelings because we came out of both games against Chelsea and Man United this season thinking we could have won and that there wasn't a difference between the teams. "We have a good opportunity to show that in the coming months and that our improvement is bigger than any other team because we are a very young side. "It's about how well we respond to what happened to us at Chelsea and Man United that will be the decider for our season. "We have played Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool away so our home form in these kind of games will be decisive.
"We are confident over taking Chelsea on at home. We face a big challenge. What we want is to produce an intelligent game full of dynamism. That is the only way we can win these big games."
..... ..... ...... ......
