After hitches with some updates in years past, Apple mobile users seem to be flocking quickly to the company's latest operating system, iOS 9, with more than half of devices installing the free update since it was released last Wednesday.
Ahead of Friday's iPhone 6s and 6s Plus releases, Apple said in a news release Monday that the iOS 9 software has seen its "fastest iOS adoption ever." Apple says the software is on pace to be downloaded by more users than any other software in its history.
The update promises an extra hour of battery life, fewer bugs and a new Siri home screen that predicts what apps users will want to use next, among other things like an improved Apple Maps. The software is available on devices going back to the iPhone 4s and iPad 2.
In the past, some of Apple's initial iOS software updates haven't been tuned well to older phones, causing owners to report slower performance, among other problems. But in a Wall Street Journal test on four generations of iPhones-the 4s, 5, 5s and 6– the software update slowed down the entire lineup by only a negligible amount. The update also fixes a bug on iOS 8 that affected how quickly you can view or edit a photo after taking it.
Apple was also adamant about making up for last year's iOS 8 launch, which left some with no cellular connectivity. This time around, Apple gave users the opportunity to test out the new software early and report bugs.
Apple also made the new software smaller, so users don't have to clear as much space from their devices in order to update. The update requires 1.3 gigabytes of free space, less than a third of iOS 8's 4.58 GB.
