Why America loses wars it starts

Since the end of World War II, why has America lost the wars it started? And why has America failed in the military interventions it made without just cause or legitimate reason? Vietnam, the invasion of Grenada, the Beirut bombings in Lebanon that killed over 240 American servicemen in October 1983, the second Iraq War that began in 2003, the Libyan intervention of 2011, and now Syria are case studies in failure. And Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is correct in stating that "we are not winning in Afghanistan."

Of course, the United States prevailed in the Cold War. George H.W. Bush was masterful in responding to the implosion of the Soviet Union, making Europe "whole, free and at peace," and liberating Kuwait in 1991, expelling Saddam Hussein in one of the most overwhelming military victories in history. But these are exceptions.

Two broad reasons explain why military failures occur irrespective of the political party in charge of the White House and no matter how noble America's intentions may have been. The first is the failure of presidents to exercise sound strategic thinking and judgment. The second is the parallel failure to have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the circumstances and situations in which military force was to be used.

Fifty years ago, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson were trapped in Vietnam because of an acute absence of sound strategic judgment. The Soviet Union was not monolithic and North Vietnam was not the vanguard of a worldwide communist takeover. Yet it took a decade and 58,000 dead Americans for Washington finally to withdraw. But did successive presidents learn from this stunning defeat? Sadly, the answer is no.

One reason for these more recent failures is that none of the last four presidents including the current one had the requisite experience or sound strategic judgment in using military force. Bill Clinton was by far the luckiest of presidents. He assumed office after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the smashing defeat of Saddam Hussein in 1991 that restored American military credibility, and the economy was about to take off. Yet, Clinton was unable to deal with al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, he ignored the humanitarian catastrophe in Rwanda, and it took 78 days to force Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic to halt genocide in Kosovo.

Nikola Solic/ReutersDespite having the "A-team" of national security advisors, George W. Bush believed that his "freedom agenda" along with the imposition of democracy would "change the geostrategic landscape of the greater Middle East" for the better. This led to the 2003 invasion and, unlike his father, occupation of Iraq under the guise of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction that did not exist — arguably the greatest American strategic catastrophe since the Civil War.

Barack Obama had no idea of how to wage the "good war" in Afghanistan while withdrawing from the "bad war" in Iraq. Drawing "red lines" and demanding that Syria's Bashar al Assad leave office exacerbated that crisis. The Libyan intervention in 2011 to "save" the people of Benghazi plunged that country into chaos. And the "strategic pivot to Asia" managed to frighten allies and anger China with no positive results.

So far, the Trump administration — despite a highly qualified national security team — has not come up with cogent policies to deal with the many crises and conflicts it inherited from Obama, including dealing with what many (wrongly) call a "resurgent Russia" and a "rising China."

Why presidents and administrations have failed to exercise sound strategic thinking is a question that should worry Americans — especially as Russia and the United States are now engaged in a dangerous military kabuki dance. American and Russian warplanes and warships are operating in proximity on and over the Eurasian littorals. In Syria, a Syrian Su-22 was just shot down by a Navy F-18 Super Hornet.

In past failures, comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the circumstance were likewise missing in action. Indeed, before 9/11, few Americans knew who and what Sunnis and Shia were. What then can be done to alert future administrations and leaders to the pitfalls of unsound strategic judgment and thinking and an acute absence of knowledge and understanding of conditions in which force may be used?

This is the question that must be put to both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. Otherwise, the future is less likely to mirror the successes in two world wars, a cold one, and Bush 41's Desert Storm; it's more likely to resemble instead the failures of Vietnam, the second Iraq War and the Libyan intervention. But will Americans listen and will its leaders lead successfully?

Time will reveal
What time Sir. It is already evident and statistics show that America is the main castigator of perrenial wars in the world today. Unfortunately they miserably lose every war they start.

Time for the American leaders to listen sir. The one yuo asked for.

Why is that, many many world powers end up in Afghanistan?

1. The Macedonian Empire- Alexander the Great with his heavily trained (in 330 B.C) army spent almost three years trying to subdue Afghanistan but failed miserably.

2. The British Empire- They Monarchy of Britain spent almost two centuries trying to subdue the Afghans, the Brits won but failed to install a proper control over the Afghans. And the Brits suffered massive casualties which made them retreat to India.

3. The Soviet Empire- The Soviet Afghan War is nicknamed the Vietnam of Russia, and probably all of us know what happened to the Russians over there. They simply were unable to win the war due to the fact that the Soviet Economy was on the brink of collapse, yet they couldn't withdraw their troops it would send a very bad image to the Communist World ( That the Soviets were no longer able to protect their allies just as they used to do in Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, China, Angola, Syria and Egypt)

4. American Empire- Successfully dismantled The Taliban Government but cannot effectively control the Country. And Why?
The answer is very simple. Afghanistan is a gateway to many growing empires who benefit a lot from having a neutral Afghanistan not tied to any major world power. On the South there is Pakistan who seeks to make Afghan not tied to Iran who is a close ally of Russia and India. On the North Afghanistan is Surrounded by Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan (Russian Satellites), they all fear the presence of American friendly nation at their doorstep. On the Western Border there is Iran, who is a formidable enemy of America, who also strives hard to sabotage the American influence in Afghanistan because it would be a great threat to her security. Unfortunately, Pakistan has a great influence over Afghanistan, on the other hand Pakistan is a great ally of The Chinese Empire. This status quo does not make The Indian Empire very happy, henceforth they have made a pact with Iran and the The RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) or the Indian Intelligence helps to sabotage Pakistan. But the bottom line is, many Asians power regardless of having kaleidoscopic interests over Afghanistan. They share one thing in Common. THEY ALL HATE AMERICA, The Russians hate Americans, The Pakistanis hate America, The Indians hate America, The Chinese hate America and The Iranians despise Americans. Pakistan is only allied to American just because she needs America in containing the Indian Influence. Source: The Diplomat Magazine

Few weeks ago, i heard that the Russians and The Chinese were arming the Taliban Militias, because it is evident that if America withdraws from Afghan then the Taliban will resume power so its better to befriend the Taliban Militias. Sources: Aljazeera, Forbes.

And trust me America not winning the War in Afghanistan, a country which shares a western border with Iran.
It will never win unless her interests go parallel with those of countries like China, Iran and India.

Good historical background. But in the case of current Amerca instigated wars, can America learn from the mistakes of the past?

War is business, every bullet, missile fired or used by the US military has a dollar value and must be paid for.In march the US fired 16 cruise missiles to syria with a value of 800000 dollars each and the next day a US commander was quoted saying the army had a low stockpile of cruise missiles.

When the US is not winning wars but just prolonging them its a strategy by millitary industrial complex to make more profit out of weapon sales. They had al qaeda in afghanistan, iraq, yemen and now they have isis, boko haram,al shabab, after that a new enemy will be born but for them its purely business.America dont lose wars they profit from them.

I concur. The question is, are humans that damned to be fooled by US time and again to get into wars that have nothing to do with their well being but the interest of millitary industrial complex? And, who is (are) this (these) so called millitary industrial complex to mind control the world to this extent?

Lockheed martins, boeing and other weapon manufacturers are the major beneficiaries of amrican's wars by making huge profits.Every bullet, missile, uniform, gun, fuel etc used in the war has a price tag but also when you hear Saudi Arabia is buying $100 billion of weapons grom the US you should ask yourself a question for what war?

People die in wars but somebody is making profit out of it,share holders of these major arms makers have been very happy for the last 17 years.
