Bwana Rick Slayman amefariki dunia baada ya kupandikiziwa figo ya nguruwe aliyokaa nayo miezi miwili.

Richard “Rick” Slayman, the first person who received a genetically modified pig kidney.
The first person to receive a genetically modified pig kidney died almost two months after the surgery. Massachusetts General Hospital, which performed the surgery, maintained that there was no indication the transplant was the cause.
Earlier, Interesting Engineering reported that Richard “Rick” Slayman, who was suffering from end-stage kidney disease, underwent critical surgery in March. Surgeons had predicted that the pig kidney would last at least two years.
“The Mass General transplant team is deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Rick Slayman. We have no indication that it was the result of his recent transplant,” said MGH in a statement.
“Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation.”
The transplanted kidney showed signs of failure approximately five years later, and Slayman resumed dialysis in May 2023, according to MGH.
Since resuming dialysis, he encountered recurrent dialysis vascular access complications requiring visits to the hospital every two weeks for de-clotting and surgical revisions, significantly impacting his quality of life and a common problem among dialysis patients.
After his transplant, Rick said that one of the reasons he underwent this procedure was to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive.
“Millions of people worldwide have come to know Rick’s story. We felt – and still feel – comforted by the optimism he provided patients desperately waiting for a transplant. To us, Rick was a kind-hearted man with a quick-witted sense of humor who was fiercely dedicated to his family, friends, and co-workers.”
A New Jersey woman had also received a genetically modified pig kidney in April. In addition, she received a mechanical pump to keep her heart beating during the surgery.
Lisa Pisano’s combination of heart and kidney failure left her too sick to qualify for a traditional transplant and out of options.

Slayman’s case gave hope
In the past, transplants of other organs from genetically modified pigs have failed, but the surgery performed on Slayman was claimed as a historic milestone.“The Mass General transplant team is deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Rick Slayman. Slayman had Type 2 diabetes, hypertension
Slayman had also been living with Type 2 diabetes and hypertension for many years. He previously received a kidney transplant from a deceased human donor in December 2018 after being on dialysis for seven years.
