Alex Kibisu, the man who reportedly escaped from the Kibera Law Courts cells in July 2025 while handcuffed, has been sentenced to death.
Kibisu staged the dramatic escape by scaling the perimeter wall of the court before disappearing into the Kibera area. At the time of his escape, he was scheduled to appear for a sentencing hearing over an additional charge of armed robbery.
Kibisu was already serving a 20-year prison sentence at Kamiti Prison for violent robbery offences. He had initially been sentenced to death, but following an appeal, the death sentence was substituted with a 20-year prison term on each count.
During the latest court proceedings, the court noted that Kibisu was not a first-time offender and also considered his decision to escape while the court process was ongoing.
The court stated:
The court further observed:
In delivering the sentence, the court said the law under which Kibisu had been charged provided for only one punishment in the circumstances before it.
Kibisu has therefore been sentenced to death in connection with the case before the Kibera Law Courts.
