At least three people have been killed after a luxury cruise ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground off the western coast of Italy.

Dozens of people are unaccounted for and coastguard vessels are combing the waters around the ship while divers search its submerged decks.

The Costa Concordia is believed to have hit a sandbar on Friday evening near the island of Giglio, taken in water and quickly listed about 20 degrees​

By Saturday morning it was lying capsized, revealing a hole 30m wide (98ft) in the hull.
