Prime Minister Raila Odinga has accused the African Union of failing to solve problems facing the continent, giving room to the West to intervene. Mr Odinga told an AU conference on Sunday that it would be pretentious to accuse the West of meddling in African affairs when those in charge have failed to secure their sovereignty.

“Let us not blame foreigners, let us blame ourselves for failing to deal with African problems instead allowing others to offer solutions for us.”

Mr Odinga argued that the continental organisation has been vague in tackling issues affecting Africa and remained ineffective despite its reformation from the Organisation of African Unity.

“It must stand up for Africa’s people, and it must prove that it is not the same old OAU that was well-known for inaction,” he said.

Mr Odinga urged members of civil society groups to help improve Africa’s situation by holding their governments accountable. The accusations came in the face of the Union’s failure to deal with political challenges in member states, while at the same time being led by leaders of questionable character.

The current chairman Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, for instance, has a record of unlawfully detaining and torturing his political opponents as well as massive corruption, according to the Transparency International.

This, the PM argued was one weakness of the AU because it cannot punish other wrong-doers.
.....
And when Libya plunged in turmoil, AU was reluctant to recognise the National Transitional Council after the death of Muammar Gaddafi.

The PM said that despite Gaddafi being one of the strongest AU financiers, its dilly-dallying allowed “the life of Africa’s most flamboyant leaders to end in a hail of bullets”.

The African Union (AU) has been seriously criticized by the Pan African Parliament (PAP). After the AU assisted in passing the UN resolutions that were abused by NATO and allied countries like Qatar to initiate the war that has devastated Libya under humanitarian pretexts, it also utterly failed to stop NATO´s aggression. After being criticized by the PAP earlier this months the AU is increasingly being blasted by PAP members for it´s failure to represent African and Libyan interests. The PAP critizism of the AU how ever, looks most like an attempt to cover it´s own failure to act on behalf of Africa.

Africa after Ghadaffi -- well NO FREE MONEY FOR OTHER CORRUPT LEADERS; they use to expect some stipend from Ghadaffi

Ghadaffi used to pay for their AU Bills, their Roads, take their Hotels, Build Mosque's all over, take their able Man to work for him and also he had plans to teach Libyans Kiswahili so Kikwete was waiting for that check to get to the Government Coffers so badly so that he can travel overseas

This past few month have been very bad on African Union. Bad judgments were made by some African countries giving support to NATO and its freinds. Though and Afrcan leader was asassinated on Afrcan soil by foreign powers Africans could not do anything. This shows that AU is just an organisation by name but has no say or power in the world. Unless Africans opt for a true UNION, we will always play acording to their rules which dont really apply for our continent. The US and EU will want to controle Africa for their gains. Africa has most of the natural resources which they need and they want these for free or cheaply. I am optimistic that the time will soon come for all Africans to accept that only through TRUE UNITY and Sacrifices will we be able to controle our destinies. LETS UNITE FOR PROGRESS OF AFRICAN MASSES. Let the asassination of Gadafi be a lesson.
