80 pct of MDs in multinationals not nationals`By Gadiosa Lamtey

1st August 2011

Marketing professionals in Tanzania have been called upon to re-define their field so as to bolster the economic growth of the country where most managing directors in international companies are foreigners.
Airtel Tanzania Limited chief commercial officer Chiruyi Walingo made the call in a keynote address he made at the monthly Marketers' Night on Friday that brought together over 100 marketers in Dar es Salaam.
"A survey of top 50 multi-national companies in Tanzania recently shows that most of the marketing heads are not Tanzanians. At least 80 percent of the managing directors too are not nationals. There is a need to re-define marketing for us to benefit from it," he said.

He called upon the marketers to master the concept of ‘co-competence' in a bid to take their respective businesses to another level.
"Business indicators are changing every day. The bottom line should be on how to ‘co-function'. You should now think of how to take your businesses forward," he said.
Under the guidance of experienced mentors in the marketing field, the upcoming local marketers can be in a better position to further develop their carriers and exceed in their duties, he observed.
Marketing department is one of the very important departments in any company but with challenges, he said.

He added" "As a result of challenges existing in the field which include among others stiff competition in the market, the marketers often find themselves spending a lot of time thinking in order to come out with strategies that will make their companies survive in a competitive market."

"But sometimes as a marketer you may find yourself unable to reach the target. This can be a little bit disturbing and can also make you despair. Under this kind of situation you need someone who is experienced in the field who can coach you on how to go so that you can perform better," he said.
Walingo noted that, it is very important for growing marketers to have mentors who will give them the necessary support they need, adding that with huge experience of such mentors, the upcoming markets will find themselves learning a lot of ethnics from them which are important in building their profession and general job performance.

He also called upon the marketers to be more innovative so that they can enable their companies to survive in the current market.
"Companies have to be innovative in their supply chains," he advised.
