For many households, bread is the ultimate ‘escort’ to go with tea every single morning. But bread can get boring with time, and for households which are not financially stable, it can be expensive because one loaf of bread might not be enough for everyone.

Because it is also very light, taking bread for breakfast will leave you hungry in just less than an hour unless you supplement it with things like eggs and bacon. Here ae healthy alternatives you can take for your breakfast instead of bread.

Boiled or roast maize

Boiled maize is not only fun to eat, but it will feel you up very fast. When buying maize for boiling, pick cobs that are freshly out of the garden, they are easier to boil and easy on the teeth when you chew them. Hard cobs will make for really tough grains that will take longer to boil and will be very hard to chew too.

If you do not fancy boiled maize, roast maize is an option. Rub lemon and pepper on the cob for added flavor, you will never look at bread again.

Boiled bananas

If you are looking for a heavy breakfast that will keep you satisfied for hours on end, get some green bananas and boil them until soft. This sort of food has no additives.

Just a pinch of salt and you are good to go. If you wish, you can stew the banana instead and take them with tea. Whichever you prefer, you will still have a very hearty, satisfying breakfast.

Githeri
This is a mixture of maize and beans cooked together. Few things beat a plate of soft, well-cooked githeri, especially if it has been prepared with maize freshly harvested. Add your preferred cereals like peas and groundnuts to it, and you have a breakfast that can double up as lunch.

Groundnuts

How do you like your groundnuts? Roasted? Boiled? With masala? Whatever your preference, groundnuts pack a lot of proteins and that is the reason you feel satisfied hours after eating them. They are also very engaging and interesting to eat.

Potatoes
The healthiest way to eat them is stewing them or baking them, but if you like something more savory, slice the potatoes, douse them into your preferred spices and fry them. This is a meal you are sure to return to again and again.

Tubers
This includes yams, sweet potatoes and cassavas. All of these are best served boiled, but you can get creative and either bake or fry them for a better breakfast experience.

Rice

If you have never tried rice and tea, you are missing out. Instead of spending money on multiple loaves of bread for a single breakfast, cook some rice and you are sorted. Make sure you prepare the rice with enough cooking oil so it does not taste bland and dry.

Left over ugali
While this may sound strange to some people, left over ugali is actually a popular combination for many people all over Kenya. You should try it sometime.

Popcorn
This won't probably do much by way of satisfaction, but if you are looking for something quick, it is your go-to option. If you are watching your weight and want to give your body the illusion of being full without actually eating much, you can have it too.
