What is Language?
Language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used by human beings in communication.

Functions of language

1. Communication function:
The main function of language is communication. We use language to convey and share information to each other.

2. Persuasive function:
We can also use language to convince others to accept our opinions. For example, politicians use persuasive language in their campaigns to convince people to vote for them.

3. Expressive function:
We can use language to express our feelings, emotions and attitudes. For example, angry, excited, surprised, sad etc.

4. Phatic function:
We also use language to create good relationship with others. For example when we greet, we use expressions like good morning, hello, how are you and Hi!. These expressions do not convey any message but aims at creating good relationship amongst people.

5. Thinking function:
We use language not only in conversation but also in our thoughts. Its very hard to think without using language when we are planning or judging in our heads.

6. Poetic function:
Literary works such as poetry, proverbs and sayings use language to convey message to the society. Moreover, literally language is not the language we use in our day-to-day communication, but just the language of art.

7. Metalinguistic reflectiveness function:
Language can be used to describe itself. For example in this article we have discussed the functions of language, so we have used language to discuss its functions.
