Fear has gripped residents of Kimwaanyi, Kiteredde and Kisoso villages in the Masaka area after anonymous leaflets threatening violence were reportedly dropped in the communities.
The leaflets, which were allegedly distributed on Tuesday evening, contain messages warning residents of impending attacks and claim that “10 heads” are needed, raising concerns about a possible return of violence in the area.
The leaflets also stated that human blood was needed and that the demands were reasonable, citing that more heads would be collected from other areas.
The threats have revived painful memories of the machete attacks that terrorised communities in the greater Masaka region in 2017 and 2021, when residents were attacked and killed in a series of incidents.
Although some residents suspect the leaflets could be intended to cause panic, they say they are taking the threats seriously because of the area’s history of violent attacks.
Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said security agencies are aware of the matter and have launched investigations to establish the source and intention of the messages.
Kasirye urged residents to remain calm and avoid acts that could further heighten tension as security agencies investigate the threats.
Security authorities are expected to establish whether the leaflets represent a genuine threat or an attempt to create fear and disrupt peace in the affected communities.
