The Zanzibar government is set to establish one-stop centres to offer services to victims of sexual and gender-based violence in all districts across the isles.
These centres will speed up assistance offered to victims of sexual and gender-based violence like medical care and legal action against suspected offenders, said Zanzibar Minister for Women, Child and Youth Development Zainab Omar Mohamed.
The minister was speaking at a joint press conference on gender-based violence, which kicked off yesterday. It is organised by the International Conference of Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).
She said the move came after realising that gender-based violence especially rape cases were increasing on the islands.
The proposed centres will be known as Mkono kwa Mkono whereby victims would be required to report sexual assault cases immediately to those centres.
She, however, said One Stop Centre had been established at Mnazi Mmoja central hospital whereby all facilities for the gender-based violence victims had been installed including a laboratory for testing the victims, a counselling office and a resting room for those who could not be discharged immediately.
The new facilities will also provide medical care to gender-based violence victims.
Our target is to address gender-based violence on the isles, she said, adding that the Zanzibar government established a law that penalised the culprits up to 30-year imprisonment.
We are very strict on this and were determined to contain gender-based violence in Zanzibar, she said.
