There’s something deeply painful about watching a woman rise to power, only to wield it the same way the men before her did. Samia Suluhu Hassan was once a symbol of hope, Tanzania’s first female president, a gentle voice in a loud political world.
She represented possibilities for African women everywhere. But somewhere between promise and presidency, something shifted. The empathy we once celebrated began to fade. Protests were silenced. Voices disappeared. Fear crept back into the streets. And suddenly, the symbol of progress started to look like the system she replaced. So maybe the real conversation is deeper than women in power, but what we do with power once we have it.
Do we nurture? Do we listen? Or do we become the very thing we fought to dismantle? We still believe in women’s leadership. Deeply. Fiercely. Unapologetically. But we also believe in accountability. Because power without empathy is just control in a new outfit. Women can, and must, lead differently, because that is where the real revolution begins.
