Telecom giant Safaricom is bleeding at least 2 million subscribers in a mass exodus to the firm’s rival Airtel in just days after exchange with Raila Odinga.
Early last week, Raila Odinga revealed a scandalous relationship between Safaricom and the IEBC in helping to rig the elections in favor of Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to Raila, the IEBC paid for two VPNS to secure transmission of results to the servers in France and back to the local servers.
Apparently, the first set worked, results went to the servers in France, but the second VPN was never used. Thus, the results transmitted and broadcast were never authenticated nor secure, i.e not from the KIEMS kits.
The revelation further reinforced the initial expose of third party accessing IEBC servers and adding/deleting Forms. Webukati’s names were used against an account that did so at least 9000 times.
After Raila revelations, Safaricom CEO quickly refuted the claims stating that the firm acted in good faith and as per the contract with IEBC.
Raila in his subsequent response warned the telco giant and other firms that NASA could decide to call on a boycott of the firms undermining the democracy of the people of Kenya.
But even before Raila issued the official orders to boycott, thousands and now millions of Kenyans have migrated from the telco giant to their rival Airtel.
This was further made easy by the new technological gains like users do not even need to change their numbers, they just change the networks.
Reports indicate Airtel business is booming at least 2 million new subscribers within the last week.
Safaricom is reported to have written another letter to Raila requesting him to rescind his remarks as the company was facing losses.
In a letter addressed to The Rt. Hon Raila Odinga dated 1st October 2017 and received by the Chief of Staff at Mr Odinga’s Capitol Hill Office, Bob Collymore pleads with Raila to spare them public demonization.
An excerpt from the letter reads;
“We are more concerned with the incessant deterioration of our market and decrease in number of Safaricom subscribers. We therefore request for a tete a tete to resolve this great impasse bearing in mind that you have also been victim of a rigged election in which we were contracted to relay results.”
