Two electoral officials were arrested on Wednesday evening at Kigando sub-county tally centre in Mubende District over suspected election fraud.
The suspects, identified as Kasaija Robert, the returning officer for Bubanda Parish, and Mutabaazi Moses, a polling police constable, presented an unsealed ballot box without a declaration form, raising suspicions of tampering with election results.
"The sub-county presiding officer immediately alerted police officers deployed at the tally centre, who arrested the two and detained them at Kigando Police Station before transferring them to Mubende Central Police Station for further investigations," said Lamech Kigozi, Wamala Region Police Spokesperson.
According to police, the ballot box presented by the suspects contained several irregularities, including missing seals and altered results.
Officers discovered that the declaration form had been tampered with, while the original genuine form was missing.
Further investigations revealed that the results on the ballot box did not match those on the declaration form.
The situation was further complicated when two LCIII councillor candidates for Kigando Sub-county, Amos Tashobia (independent) and Emmanuel Tashobia (NRM), submitted their own declaration forms with different results, adding to the confusion.
This led Mubende district Returning Officer Ferdinand Tumwesigye to cancel all results from Bubanda Parish, citing compromised electoral materials.
"Due to the inconsistencies and irregularities, we had no choice but to cancel the results and order fresh elections for both direct councillors and female councillors," Tumwesigye said. The fresh elections will be held on a date to be communicated soon.
Lamech Kigozi said police are preparing several charges against the suspects, including failure to protect government electoral materials, alteration of election results, and theft of polling materials.
"The suspects will face the law and be held accountable for their actions," he warned.
Investigations are ongoing, and the case file will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney in Mubende for prosecution.
