Europe Faces ‘Polar Winter’ – Serbian President

Europe is facing a difficult winter this year, but the next one will be “polar,” Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Wednesday.

This winter is going to be very cold for all of us,” Vucic said, adding that “next winter will be polar for all of Europe.”

A recent announcement by the Russian energy giant Gazprom that Nord Stream 1, a key gas route from Russia to the EU, would remain shut indefinitely due to sanctions-related maintenance problems drove wholesale gas prices up even further.

Both Turkey and Serbia, however, made it clear that they would continue to rely on energy from Russia. Belgrade recently struck a deal with Moscow for additional volumes of natural gas.

Europe Banks Prepare Backup Generators & Dimmed Lights

Major European banks are test-running how to cope amidst potential power shortages, with plans including diesel-power generators, squeezing office space, cutting hot water and turning off lights overnight.

JPMorgan has run power outage simulations already with generators that will offer a few days’ power amidst fears that ATMs and online transactions may be crippled, while Deutsche Bank has cut back energy usage in its 1,400 premises in Germany, even turning off the fountain at HQ.

Avi Schnurr, CEO of think-tank the Electric Infrastructure Security Council, still believes there is "a serious gap in resilience planning”.

EU Energy Ministers Rush to Brussels Amid Spiraling Power Costs

Energy ministers from the 27 European Union countries are meeting in Brussels on Friday to discuss a set of proposals aimed at combating rocketing power prices.

Among the measures on the agenda according to EC President Ursula von der Leyen are a Russian gas price cap - which Hungary has already opposed - capping profits of companies producing electricity without gas, and solidarity payments from fossil fuel companies.

The meeting comes amid claims that deliveries of Russian gas have fallen at least 90% in the past 12 months.

North Korea Threatens “Automatic & Immediate” Nuke Strike If Provoked

North Korea has issued a document outlining its approach to nuclear warfare, warning it will not hesitate to use the bomb if it perceives threats to its senior leadership or “important strategic targets,” state media has reported.

A statement on the “nuclear force policy of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” was carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Friday, noting that while the government considers nuclear weapons a “last resort,” it would deploy them to prevent “aggression that seriously threatens the security of the state and people.”

The policy document went on to note that Pyongyang would launch a preemptive strike “automatically and immediately” if officials believe “the command and control system for the national nuclear force is in danger due to an attack by hostile forces.”
