Uzbekistan's Prime Minister, who has affirmed his country's alliance with Vladimir Putin's Russia, has been appointed its acting president after the death of strongman leader Islam Karimov.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev has been in his role as premier since 2003 and was previously governor of two of Uzbekistan's provinces.
He was appointed interim president less than a week after mourners were seen weeping at the funeral of Mr Karimov in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.
The 78-year-old dictator, whose death was announced on Friday, had led the ex-Soviet nation since 1989, with many criticising his rule as autocratic and ruthless.
Mr Mirziyoyev, who was born in 1957, had been designated mourner-in-chief - seen as an indication that he might take over.
According to Russian news agency Interfax, Mr Mirziyoyev held meetings with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Vladmir Putin after the funeral at which he reaffirmed his alliance.
Interfax quoted Mr Mirziyoyev as telling the Russian President that Uzbek relations with Russia "have been and will be a strategic partnership, (an) alliance."
The Diplomat magazine said Mr Mirziyoyev is, like Mr Karimov, part of the Samarkand clan of tribal loyalties.
The Samarkand clan and its rival Tashkent clan - which dominates the police force - have in the past been prone to intercommunal violence.
The publication says that the country's head of internal security Rustam Inoyatov - who many see as a kingmaker - may throw his support behind the Prime Minister to take over as President because he will balance power between the two clans.
