UPDF Airforce base commander, Col. Opita arrested over plot to overthrow President Museveni

Uganda People’s Defence Force [UPDF] Entebbe air force base Garrison Commander, Col Dan Opito Odwe, has been arrested over alleged coup plot.

Army spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda says at least 30 people are being detained on suspicion of plotting to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni’s government.

He says the group including Nakawa Division MP Micheal Kabaziguruka was suspected of planning an armed uprising against Museveni.

Ankunda said the detainees were arrested from the military headquarters in Bombo and Kyengera in Wakiso district after some guns went missing.

Col Opito’s son only identified as Ogwal who stays in the US says his father was expected to go for further training before his arrest.

Opito was picked from his office in Entebbe, the third time he is being arrested by the same regime.

Opito, a former rebel commander in Lango surrendered in 1989 and was given amnesty before being integrated into the armed forces.
