Traffic jams may soon be a thing of the past as Ngong Road's expansion begins on Monday, Kenya Urban Roads Authority has announced.
Phase one of the road's expansion to a dual carriageway will cover a 2.6km stretch from Kenya National Library to Ring Road Kilimani Junction, communications officer John Cheboi said on Friday.
Cheboi also said President Uhuru Kenyatta will preside over the launch.
Ngong Road's expansion started in April after the contract was awarded to World Kaihatsu Kogyo Ltd, a Japanese-based construction company.
The company was the lowest bidder and the programme is sponsored through a grant from the Japanese government's Economic Cooperation Program Project.
The negotiated contract was signed in Tokyo, Japan on January 14 at a cost of Sh1.3 billion .
The contract includes expanding the existing road from two to four lanes, rehabilitating the existing pavement, and improving major intersections.
Other work on Ngong Road includes repairing existing drainage facilities, construction of box culverts, construction of pedestrian walkways, construction of segregated cycle tracks to bitumen standards, installation of street lighting and provision of a corridor for future implementation of a rapid bus transit system along the Ngong Road corridor.
Cheboi said work on the road is expected to be complete by July 2017.
Other roads currently undergoing expansion are Lang'ata Road, which will become a dual carriageway and Outer Ring, which is being constructed to a superhighway.
