The Deputy Director of Curriculum Review and Instructional Materials Development at the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), Dr Patrice Ssembirige, has confirmed that the Primary School Curriculum, which is currently under review, will be rolled out in 2028, with substantial changes.
‘‘We are anticipating to have our first roll out of lower primary (P1-P3) in 2028.
According to the NCDC, some of the proposed changes, include reducing lower primary subjects from eight to four, increasing examinable Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) subjects to six, introducing Kiswahili language, as well as a plan to replace traditional aggregates with letter grades at assessment.
Proposed learning areas will likely include Religious Studies, Mathematics, Literacy (incorporating English, local languages, and Kiswahili), and Livelihood Studies. A new language of instruction, Kiswahili is being integrated in the curriculum, starting from Primary Three alongside existing local languages and English instructional frameworks.
The NCDC has also proposed that subjects examined at Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) be increased from four to six by making Religious Education and Kiswahili standalone tested subjects, alongside Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, and Social Studies.
“One of the principles we are following is to reduce the workload in primary because we are having challenges. Our students carry very heavy bags, going to school very early in the morning and leaving so late. It is very clear that the load is very heavy,” Dr Irumba explained.
Classroom time to reduce
The time children spend at school could also be reduced to enable them participate in other activities such as project-based learning and physical education. The big part of the afternoon will be dedicated to extracurricular activities.
