Former Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, has said many Ugandans are increasingly frustrated by what he described as worsening economic hardship and poor governance after four decades of President Museveni's rule.

Speaking on NBS Television's Frontline political talk show, Lukwago argued that despite the National Resistance Movement (NRM) being in power for 40 years, many citizens continue to face poverty, unemployment, a high cost of living, and limited economic opportunities. He said the country's current state has left many Ugandans "hungry, angry and desperate."

Lukwago criticized the government's record on industrialization, job creation, and wealth distribution, claiming that ordinary citizens have not adequately benefited from Uganda's economic growth. According to him, many young people remain unemployed, while public services such as healthcare and education continue to face significant challenges.

During the programme, he also questioned the government's continued emphasis on its liberation credentials, arguing that Ugandans are more concerned about present-day challenges affecting their livelihoods. He said citizens are increasingly focused on issues such as income, food security, healthcare, education, and accountability in public service delivery.

Lukwago further contended that growing public dissatisfaction is evident across the country and suggested that the political landscape is changing as more Ugandans demand reforms and improved governance. He maintained that after four decades in power, the government should be judged primarily on the living conditions of its citizens.

The remarks were made during a discussion on Uganda's political and economic direction ahead of the next phase of governance, with panelists debating the achievements and shortcomings of the NRM government as it marks 40 years in power.
