Uganda has once more shut down social media on account of opposition.

Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and other platforms have been put off on directives of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).

UCC claims that opposition is planning to disrupt President Yoweri Museveni’s swearing in ceremony.

The platforms will be off until Thursday evening at the close of the ceremony.

This comes hours after opposition leader Kizza Besigye reportedly took oath s the president of Uganda and got arrested shrtly after. Pictures of his presence down town Kampala as well as the swearing in video went viral on social media.

During the February 2016 elections, the government shutdown social media for “security reasons”. It is giving a similar excuse today.

The Telecom and service providers we contacted confirmed that all social media platforms are currently down.

Ugandans have now resorted to using VPN which saved them in February from the shut down.

There is fear that the government is not only closing social media and mobile money services but might go an extra mile and shut down the internet itself
