Setting ground for arrest?
President Hakainde Hichilema's Zambian government now links the opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile to an alleged armed insurrection plot, after authorities said he was found at the scene where "high-grade military weapons", ammunition and other materials allegedly intended for an armed insurrection were seized.
At least 10 senior figures in Mundubileβs political camp have been arrested, including his spokesperson George Chisanga and Patrick Mwansa, the husband of former President Edgar Lunguβs daughter. The government alleges that they worked with foreign nationals and had plans to establish illegal military training camps.
On Saturday, Mundubile stated that βheavily armed personnel believed to be members of the Zambia National Armyβ came to his residence in what he described as an attempt on his life, saying shots were fired, his home was invaded and his family was terrorised.
He had alleged that the military was being used to manipulate the outcome in favour of President Hichilema, who is seeking reelection.
Hours later, the electoral commission suspended vote counting, citing theft of marked ballot papers and violence against its officials without giving clear details. Opposition figures read this, abrupt suspension and swift resumption of counting, as a ploy to influence the presidential result.
Earlier, the security forces arrested and detained three of Mundubile's Tonse Alliance security officials, Victor Muziamba, Dixon Tembo and Gideon Kalopa, after they returned from Russia, where the alliance says they had undergone VVIP security training to protect him against threats, rejecting allegations that the three were trained to disrupt Zambiaβs elections or engage in treasonous activities.
