[h=1]Shawcross keen to impress Capello with top displays in Europe[/h] Published 23:00 24/07/11 By Phil Cadden

Ryan Shawcross has set his sights on an England cap – and believes impressing with Stoke in the Europa League will alert Fabio Capello.
The Potters captain leads City into their first *European tie for 37 years when they host Hajduk Split on Thursday.
And the centre-back is determined to impress England boss Capello in the third round qualifying tie.
A former Manchester United trainee, Shawcross said: "My aim is to get into the England team, and proving I can play on the big stage in Europe will only help that.

"I've been to European nights at Old Trafford so I know what it's like but this will be my first experience of playing in Europe. I can't wait.
"We've proved we can play in the Premier League and Europe is the next step for us all. Hopefully I can play well and work hard and that will influence the manager into picking me.
"It's always tough to get into the England set-up because there are a lot of world-class players in my position but it's something I'm striving for."
Shawcross, an unused sub for a friendly against Egypt last year and who has played for the under-21s, believes England's clash with Holland on August 10 may come too soon for him but hopes to be in the reckoning for September's Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales

[h=1]Beckham tells United: Go get Sneijder[/h] Published 23:03 24/07/11 By David McDonnell in Los Angeles

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/tra...ham-of-Los-Angeles-Galaxy-article775668.html#

David Beckham has identified Wesley Sneijder as the man to replace Paul Scholes at Manchester United.
United are trying to prise Sneijder from Inter Milan but the potential deal has stalled over the £35million fee demanded by the Serie A club.
Beckham believes Holland World Cup star Sneijder is the ideal candidate to fill the void left by retired Scholes.
He told Mirror Sport: "To replace Scholesy, they're going to have to get someone special.

"There's a lot of talk about Sneijder and he's such a talented player, I'm sure he would fit right into a Manchester United team.
"He could do a job there, without a doubt. Scholesy is the one player they want to replace. He was such a great talent and he will be missed."
Beckham, who will face former club United in New Jersey on Wednesday, as part of an MLS All-Stars team, is also excited by Sir Alex Ferguson's summer signings – especially new keeper David de Gea.
"I've seen them bring in the young keeper, with great *experience of playing in La Liga," said Beckham.
"He's got a huge space to fill because [Edwin] van der Sar was so successful, but I don't think that will be a problem.
"He's played at a good level in Spain and let's hope he does well because United have always had good keepers."

[h=1]Sir Alex Ferguson does not expect to make further signings this summer[/h] • Manchester United manager admits missing out on targets
• 'At this moment, I can't see another addition'

Sir Alex Ferguson doubts whether he will sign any more players before Manchester United face their neighbours in the Community Shield at Wembley next month after admitting that the player he really wants is "not available".
The United manager has signed three players this summer but an extensive search for a playmaker to replace Paul Scholes has so far proved to be a failure.
It is anticipated that if Luka Modric and Samir Nasri leave Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal respectively, they will head to clubs other than United and a deal to bring the Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder to Old Trafford from Internazionale has floundered due to the extreme costs involved.
Ferguson is therefore preparing with the squad he has now for a Community Shield match with a difference as it pitches United against their Manchester rivals, City, who won the FA Cup last season to end a 35-year trophy drought.
"It is not a normal Community Shield for Manchester United," said Ferguson. "It is addressing our noisy neighbours again. It will be an interesting match."
It is a phrase Ferguson first used following United's dramatic derby triumph over City at Old Trafford in September 2009, when Michael Owen scored the winner in a 4-3 victory. City have since made even further inroads on United's territory, with Ferguson admitting the prospect of further signings is slim. "We lost five players in their 30s this summer. That helped finance the three younger players – Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea – I have brought to the club.
"At this moment, I can't see another addition. The type of player we might have been looking for is not available. I am happy with the players I have got at this moment in time."
Ferguson also revealed that Javier Hernández, who has finally made his eagerly awaited appearance on tour following a triumphant Gold Cup campaign with Mexico, is unlikely to be involved in the match with the MLS All‑Stars at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday. Hernández only began training on Monday and the United manager does not want to push him too hard.
"He has had a month's holiday, which he needed after the Gold Cup," said Ferguson. "It was a long season and he played in the World Cup as well, so he has not had a lot of rest in the last year. The most important thing for us is to give him some proper training before we even consider him for the first team."
Hernández's arrival has been welcomed by fans, who on United's three stops so far have been disappointed by the Mexican's absence. It is a reflection of the impact he has made since joining the club 12 months ago, although he insists his life has not changed despite the obvious adulation.
"I feel the same," he said. "I am playing for the best team in the world. The only thing that has changed in the last 12 months is that I have played a lot of games. All I have done is try to improve. That is the only thing on my mind.
"This whole move has been a dream come true for me. The key has probably been my boss and my team-mates. It means a lot to me to be part of Manchester United. All the extra things are just that, extra things. To be part of this team is wonderful."

[h=1]Arsenal's Emmanuel Eboué set for £4m move to Galatasaray[/h] • Jay Emmanuel-Thomas heading for Ipswich for £1m
• Arsenal and Barcelona no closer over Cesc Fábregas's future

Arsène Wenger is close to raising £5m through the sales of Emmanuel Eboué to Galatasaray and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas to Ipswich Town as he enters what may be the defining week in the Cesc Fábregas saga. The Arsenal manager has identified the areas of his squad that need refreshing and Eboué, having been deemed surplus to requirements, is set to depart to Galatasaray for £4m.
The Ivorian is a popular member of the dressing room but Wenger appeared to lose patience with him towards the end of last season after he conceded a last-gasp penalty at home to Liverpool, which led to the concession of two vital points.
Eboué did not travel on the tour of east Asia, with Wenger citing a calf injury as the reason. But he was also left at home when they went to Germany last Friday to enable him to finalise his transfer. Wenger will move Emmanuel-Thomas, the 20-year-old reserve-team attacking talent, to Ipswich for £1m and he also hopes to sell Nicklas Bendtner and Manuel Almunia before the end of next month. Neither player travelled to Asia or Germany, with Bendtner having held talks with Borussia Dortmund. Almunia is of interest to Atlético Madrid, Malaga and Fenerbahce.
Wenger has sold Gaël Clichy to Manchester City for £7m and loaned Denilson to São Paulo for the season. He has signed Gervinho from Lille for £10.6m and Carl Jenkinson from Charlton Athletic for £1m.
The subject of Fábregas's future has once again cast long shadows over the club's plans, with Wenger fighting to convince him that he would be better served remaining at Arsenal and rejecting Barcelona's overtures. The captainFábregas wants the move back to his hometown club and, knowing this, Barcelona have refused to get close enough to Arsenal's £40m asking price, reasoning that having the will of the player ought to permit them a cheaper deal. Arsenal, though, feel frustrated and insulted by this stance and they refuse to sell one of their prized assets for what they believe is below his market value.
They have made it clear to Barcelona that the situation must to be resolved quickly and they are approaching the point where, if the Catalans fail to make an acceptable offer, they will announce that Fábregas is staying.

[h=1]Dimitar Berbatov: Where else could match Manchester United if I left?[/h]• 'If you go somewhere else it is a big step down'
• Striker admits fans misunderstand laid-back approach
Dimitar Berbatov believes only Barcelona would be a step up from playing for Manchester United. Photograph: John Peters/Man Utd via Getty Images

Dimitar Berbatov has spoken for the first time about why he has decided to stay at Manchester United despite the crushing blow of not even making the substitutes' bench for last season's Champions League final. "Where can you go? Only down," said the player who combined winning the Premier League's Golden Boot without convincing Sir Alex Ferguson he could influence the more important matches.
Berbatov was so distraught about Ferguson's selection against Barcelona he never emerged from the Wembley dressing rooms, but it was far from the first time the Bulgarian has been overlooked for key fixtures.
The paradox is the 30-year-old scored 21 league goals last season and, speaking on the club's pre-season tour to the United States, he was unapologetic about his playing style. "You are not going to see me puffing around the pitch," he said. "There is a saying in Bulgaria that great quality doesn't require much effort. I always play like this. That is what got me here."
That style can polarise opinion among United's supporters and there is clear evidence that Ferguson has lost trust in the club's most expensive signing when it comes to Champions League knockout matches or games against the Premier League's top clubs.
Berbatov was unwilling to speak in detail about his ordeal in the Champions League final – "I don't want to go back to that," he said – but he made it clear that he had never wanted to leave Old Trafford.
"Manchester United is the top [club]. Smaller clubs might be able to match Manchester United with the way they play, with their organisation, everything. But Manchester United are at the top. Where can you go from there? Only down.
"At the moment, I don't see anything else. If you go somewhere it is a big step down [and], for me, I always went up, up, up in my career. I am happy [at United]."
Berbatov went on to say the disappointment against Barcelona would "drive me on" but he also firmly believes he can return to another Champions League final. "I still have time. Sometimes in the future ... I am sure. The good thing about football is that there is always next year. You can make things right."
As for his form over the previous year, he added: "Last season was proof that even if you have some downs in your career, if you believe in the way you play, in your style of play, you can do it."
Berbatov has only a year to run on his contract, although United have a "one-way option" whereby they can extend it by another 12 months whenever they want. The striker was guarded about whether he would like to stay longer – "that is a personal thing that we only discuss with the boss and the chairman" – but he was candid enough to acknowledge that he will face a battle to get into the team on a regular basis next season given that United's travelling party, preparing to face the MLS All-Stars in New Jersey on Wednesday (kick-off 1.30am Thursday UK time), includes seven different forwards.
"I am not 21 any more," he said. "There are many young and talented players now, including some from the academy. The last season is in the past. The goals I scored, what I did, I have done it. This is a new season. It starts all over again."
Berbatov went on to describe himself as "motivated and concentrated" and determined to show that he can bounce back from a disappointment that could conceivably have left a different player questioning whether he should find another club.
Berbatov, of course, has always thought differently to the average player, maintaining that the public still does not understand him. "I am a very proud person. I don't like to show my weaknesses in public. I don't want to show my emotions in public. That is why people probably sometimes misjudge me. But that is OK."

José Enrique's moaning on Journalist Obsession Internet Site has rattled a few cages at Newcastle United. They're going to respond to his No Ambition claims by spending £9m on Peter Crouch and 17p on Wayne Bridge. Oh, and they're going to get rid of José Enrique, with both Arsenal and Liverpool interested.
Bolton Wanderers will offer £3m for David Ngog. Liverpool are prepared to give him to the Trotters for nothing if they also take Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen off their hands. That reads like a cheap joke, doesn't it. And yet.
Swansea City want Middlesbrough pair Marvin Emnes and Leroy Lita. Er... Championship players aren't the Rumour Mill's strong point, but at least we admit it.
Wigan Athletic want striker Jamie Murphy from Motherwell. Murphy is something of a sensation in Scottish football, in that he's born in the country, half-decent, and doesn't want to play for the Republic of Ireland.
Murphy only need look to James McFadden for what can happen when Scotland comes calling for Motherwell prospects. Blackburn Rovers and Everton are showing vague interest in the out-of-contract striker. What's Giovanni Trapattoni's phone number again?
Burnley are favourites to sign Vladimir Weiss on loan from Manchester City. That it's come to this for the mighty Rangers.
Liverpool are interested in Hugo Rodallega, but they'll have to head off Sunderland at the pass, which is something they couldn't manage for Connor Wickham, so.
QPR want DJ Campbell, Aston Villa will bid for Alan Hutton, and Chelsea will have to pay £44m for Palermo playmaker Javier Pastore. Should this final link be the lead rumour? Well, maybe, but the story has been swirling around for at least a month, so nah.

[h=1]I haven't forgotten how to score goals, says Fernando Torres[/h]• Spaniard 'ready' to end goal drought for Chelsea this season
• Don't compare Torres to Shevchenko, says John Terry

Fernando Torres has said he has not "forgotten" how to score and has declared himself "ready" to end his goal drought for Chelsea this season.
The Spaniard, with only one competitive goal to his name in 18 appearances following his £50m transfer from Liverpool, has failed to convince so far in pre-season and is yet to find the net during the club's tour to Asia.
But speaking in Hong Kong, where Chelsea will end their trip this week with two matches in the Barclays Asia Trophy, Torres said: "I'm 27. Don't worry, I don't forget to score goals ... I will score.
"It's going to be a big season. My form is OK, it's time to be fit and ready. We're trying to get into the best form. We have got big expectations and I can see the winning mentality we have [at Chelsea]."
Torres's new manager, André Villas-Boas, last week claimed there is an "obsession" with the striker's troubles and urged critics to focus on the "importance of the collective" rather than the struggles of one individual. But it remains to be seen whether the Portuguese will find a way of accommodating both Torres and Didier Drogba in the same side.
Torres's travails have begun to draw comparisons with Andriy Shevchenko, another big-money signing who failed to live up to expectations during his time at Stamford Bridge. However, the captain, John Terry, feels that is a premature assessment.
"I think that's unfair on Fernando, he had the injury he sustained at the World Cup and came into the season with that," Terry said. "He would like to have scored more goals than he did. He's in the same position as everyone else, he's looked sharp in training and in the games also.
"He's happy, there's a bit of pressure on him but that's why he's one of the best strikers in the world. He's wants to win the Premier League, that's one of the first things he said to me."

[h=1]Aguero arrives for City medical[/h] Published 10:54 27/07/11 By MirrorFootball

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/tra...r-Manchester-City-medical-article776701.html#

Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero has arrived in England for a medical as he closes in on a £38million move to Manchester City.
The 23-year-old Argentina international was at City's Carrington training ground this morning having cut short a holiday in his homeland to fly in to finalise contract negotiations and undergo the medical.
Aguero, the son-in-law of Diego Maradona, is currently on leave having been involved in the Copa America.
"Just arrived in Manchester to finalise the details of signing with City," Aguero wrote on Twitter.

"Everything is going very well! I'll tell you more in a while."
The 23-year-old with the world at his feet: What Man City fans can actually expect from Sergio Aguero
With striker Carlos Tevez adamant he wants to leave City to be nearer his family in Argentina Aguero is seen as the ideal replacement.
Younger than his compatriot by four years, the Atletico Madrid star has been a prolific goalscorer in La Liga.
He is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe, which is why his club inserted a £38million buy-out clause when they gave him a new contract in January.
Atletico had resigned themselves to the fact they would lose their prized asset when he announced in May, before the Copa America, that he wanted to leave.
Aguero's preference was to remain in Spain, with city rivals Real seemingly the most likely destination, but Atletico were keen to resist such a move.
So for Atletico an offer from Manchester City, although Italian club Juventus were also interested, represented the preferred option.
Atletico coach Gregorio Manzano admitted last night that Aguero's departure looked imminent.
"It seems as though in the coming hours we will have a final outcome to the issue that has has occupied us for so long," he told Spanish radio station Cope.
"It is already in it's final stretch, I've asked the players to focus on Thursday's game (a Europa League tie against Stromsgodset).
"Unfortunately we won't be able to call on Kun (Aguero)."

[h=1]Rummenigge calls for top clubs to revolt against FIFA[/h] Published 10:16 27/07/11 By MirrorFootball

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/new...bs-to-revolt-against-FIFA-article776697.html#

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has called for the game's top clubs to clean up football as he believes FIFA can no longer be relied upon to govern properly.
Rummenigge, chairman of the European Club Association and chief executive officer of Bayern Munich, wants clubs to instigate a revolution in the game.
The ECA replaced the G14 as the body representing Europe's top clubs including the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Rummenigge has called for change because of recent scandals to hit the game such as the life ban for former FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam and suspicion over the bidding process which led to Qatar being awarded the 2022 World Cup.

"I don't accept any longer that we [should be] guided by people who are not serious and clean," he told the Guardian.
"Now is the moment to intervene. Because knowing something is wrong is an obligation to change."
Rummenigge believes clubs around the world, both large and small, are in favour of change.
"It's not just the top clubs, it's all the clubs," he said.
"Sepp Blatter is saying [that he is cleaning up] but the fact that no one believes him tells you everything you need to know.
"I'm not optimistic because they believe the system is working perfectly as it is. It's a money machine, World Cup after World Cup. And for them, that's more important than serious and clean governance."
Rummenigge also wants to see a reduction in international fixtures and is ready to lead a breakaway from national associations who he believes have too much invested in the current system.
"I will give them a chance but I'm ready for a revolution if that's the only way to come to a solution," he said.

Manchester United are considering a bid for Roma striker Mirko Vucinic, according to the player's agent.
The Montenegro international has been linked with Tottenham this summer, but Juventus were thought to be leading the chase for him.
Now his agent Alessandro Lucci has claimed he has held talks with United about the 27-year-old.
"I met Manchester United yesterday," Lucci told Italian website lasignoraingiallorosso.it . "We spoke about Vucinic, but we didn't reach an agreement.

"United like Vucinic but there's still a lot of work to do to see Mirko at Old Trafford."

Arsenal target Santi Cazorla is set to join big-spending La Liga side Malaga today.
The Gunners and Liverpool were thought to be interested in the 26-year-old winger but Villarreal have now announced a deal has been struck with Malaga.
He is expected to finalise his switch today once he has passed a medical.
Neither club have revealed the size of the fee but reports in Spain suggest he is costing Malaga around €19million.

"The change is important and also exciting, but it is hard to assimilate that I am leaving after seven years."

[h=1]Toon target £10m Defoe (Report)[/h] Published 23:14 26/07/11 By Football Spy

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/tra...ain-Defoe-10millon-Report-article776503.html#

Alan Pardew has identified Jermain Defoe as the man to revitalise Newcastle's frontline, according to reports in the Sun today.
The Toon boss will move for the Tottenham striker if he fails to land his top target, Turkish hit man Mevlut Erdinc.
Pardew is hoping to tie up a £7m deal for Paris Saint-Germain forward Erdinc, but is losing patience as negotiations the player's agent drag on, and will switch his attention to Defoe if the deal doesn't come off.
The England striker is out of favour at Spurs and could be allowed to leave for as little as £10million.

Newcastle still have the lion's share of the £35million Liverpool paid for Andy Carroll in January to spend, and manager Alan Pardew has repeatedly promised fans that the club has been working hard to sign a big-name forward.
"I am confident we will get a striker in," he said on Newcastle's pre-season tour in the US.
"After the Orlando game, there were plenty of fans who came out to see us and mentioned on more than one occasion to me, 'Where's the striker?' It is not something that is far from my mind.
"Everybody will start making moves shortly. We do not want to miss out - but we have been trying to bring a striker in for a while. We are ahead of the game."
