Woods, hoping to extend winning streak, charges to lead at Dubai Desert Classic

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Tiger Woods picked up right where he left off last week - at the top of the leaderboard. Woods, who won the Buick Invitational on Sunday by eight strokes, shot a 7-under 65 Thursday to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic.

"I played well today, just a bunch of good golf shots,"" Woods said after his bogey-free round at the Emirates Golf Club.

Eleven players, including Miguel Angel Jimenez and Abu Dhabi Golf Championship winner Martin Kaymer, were tied for second at 67. Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia and defending champion Henrik Stenson were tied with 10 others another stroke back. Woods said he played better in Dubai than he did last week at Torrey Pines.

"I had two good days of practice the last couple days and started to hit the ball a lot better than I did last week,"" said Woods, who won the Dubai tournament in 2006. Last year, Woods was plagued by poor putting and finished third here. He missed a few chances Thursday, but wasn"t complaining.

"I had a couple of good opportunities to make some putts and just kind of ran them over the edge, but overall today was just - couldn"t ask for a better start,"" the world"s No. 1 player said. Jet lag also didn"t appear to bother him.

"The better shape I"ve gotten, the easier it is. I don"t usually have a problem. It usually takes me maybe a day and I"m good to go,"" said Woods, who arrived in Dubai on Tuesday after flying halfway around the world to the oil-rich United Arab Emirates.

Woods" dominant win at the Buick Invitational was his fourth straight and 62nd career title, tying Arnold Palmer for fourth place on the PGA Tour list. If he triumphs in Dubai, it will be his seventh win in eight starts. "He"s playing at a very good level at the moment,"" Garcia said. "We know that the only thing we can do is keep trying, keep trying, keep playing our hardest and, you know, try to challenge him as much as possible.""

Kaymer had been trailing Woods by one until he bogeyed the final hole.

Jimenez had a hole-in-one on the seventh.

Colin Montgomerie, who played in the same pairing with Woods, banged his driver on the turf after hitting a wayward shot at the ninth hole. Though the Scot made four birdies, he also had two double-bogeys - including at the ninth - to finish at 72.

In windy, dusty conditions in Dubai Friday, Tiger Woods and the best players on
the European Tour competed on the Emirates Golf Club.

A horrid day at the Dubai Desert swirling winds forced players to double bogeys and birdies were scarce.

Tiger Woods is fighting to get the job done.



Woods' approach to the second green found the rough,
forcing him to play this recovery shot. He was able to get up-and-down for par.



Ernie Els (The big easy) found the tall grass on the 13th hole Friday.
The South African shot 72 to finish tied for 13th. He was nearly thinking of being in Kruger National Park.



Fredrik Andersson Hed of Sweden gave this shot on the third hole everything he had,
but he also missed the cut after shooting 75.




Woods found the sand off the tee on the par-5 13th hole.



Sergio Garcia (El Nino) had to be very careful not to incur a penalty as he inspected
the lie of his ball on the 14th hole. The young Spaniard shot 71 to finish in a tie for fifth. For the moment he wanted to copy the perfection of Fabregas his fellow country man.



Woods' 71, which included four birdies and three bogeys, was good enough to give
him a one-shot lead after two rounds.

Relentless as ever, Woods made 14 birdies in 29 holes in the high desert of Dove Mountain to overwhelm Stewart Cink for an 8-and-7 victory, the largest margin in the final match in the 10-year history of his fickle event.

Woods captured his 15th World Golf Championship, holding all three world titles for the first time. And his 63rd career victory moved him past Arnold Palmer and into fourth place alone on the PGA Tour's career list. His next victory will tie him with Ben Hogan.

Golf is not a fair fight at the moment. "I think maybe we ought to slice him open to see what's inside," Cink said. "Maybe nuts and bolts." Cink was only the latest victim in a winning streak that dates to Sept. 3, 2007, a date worth remembering.

He will make the cut today and tomorrow he may sho0t -7. Mkuu Bado sana hii kitu.

I guarantee he will get 2 more birdies and finish the round with -4. He's playing number 11 now.
