Project Background:

The Salvation Army, an international movement operating in 118 countries, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church.

The Salvation Army Kenya East Territory WASH Project seeks to ensure an effective and healthy learning environment for 10,000 primary school pupils through hygiene promotion and the provision of improved access to water and sanitation facilities in Salvation Army sponsored rural schools.

This is a 3 year project, targeting 40 schools in parts of Central and Eastern Kenya.

WATSAN Engineer- 1 Person

Position Summary:

The role of this position is to oversee all technical aspect of the water and sanitation improvements undertaken by the targeted schools. This is a full time contract position for one year, renewable based on performance.

The position is based at our Territorial Headquarters in Karen, Nairobi, and will involve travel to rural areas approximately 70% of the time.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist the project manager in conducting baseline surveys in the schools that participate in the project, in order to evaluate hygiene practices and identify current water and sanitation concerns, and for use in future monitoring and evaluation of the project.
Produce standard drawings for school sanitation facilities that meet the key minimum requirements for such facilities as set out in the project document.
Design a comprehensive application form for the schools, including criteria that will determine the selection of schools.
Advise and direct schools on appropriate water and sanitation technologies that will meet the key minimum standards set out in the project design.
Examine and approve all plans, designs and budgets produced by participating schools for water and sanitation improvements.
Oversee construction of water harvesting facilities and other water supply improvements, including final inspection of facilities.
Assist the project manager in designing an effective monitoring and evaluation system for the project, including forms, questionnaires, deadlines and individual tasks and responsibilities.
Compile and submit regular monitoring reports and final inspection reports to the project manager.
Assist the Project Manager in the preparation of quarterly / annual activity and financial reports
Ensure proper record keeping in line with the means of verification of the logical frame work in the project document.
Preparation of contracts documents and BoQs for WATSAN works.
Other duties as may be required within the scope of the project.
Qualifications & Experience:

Minimum of Higher diploma in Water or Civil Engineering.
Minimum 3 years experience as a Water & Sanitation Engineer preferably with an NGO or CBO.
Specific experience in rain water harvesting technologies and knowledge of other rural water supply solutions.
Strong background in community mobilization and use of participatory techniques to foster community involvement and ownership.
Excellent computer skills. Knowledge of Auto-CAD, SPSS desired.
Proven ability to work in a team.
Fluent written and verbal English and Kiswahili language skills.
Construction Supervisor- 1 Person

Position Summary:

The role of this position is to guide and supervise the construction all of water and sanitation improvements undertaken by the targeted schools, ensuring quality control and effective use of resources.

This is a full time contract position for one year, renewable based on performance. The position is based at our Territorial Headquarters in Karen, Nairobi, and will involve travel to rural areas approximately 70% of the time.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Advise and direct schools on choosing water and sanitation technologies that are appropriate to local conditions and that also meet the key minimum standards set out in the project document
Assist the Water & Sanitation Engineer in examining and assessing all plans, designs and budgets produced by participating schools for water and sanitation improvements.
Supervise the construction of water harvesting and sanitation facilities undertaking within the targeted schools to ensure quality control (materials and workmanship) and effective use of resources.
Compile and submit regular monitoring reports and final inspection reports on all construction work to the project manager.
Ensure proper record keeping in line with the means of verification of the logical frame work in the project document.
Assist the Project Manager in the preparation of quarterly / annual activity and financial reports
Other duties as may be required within the scope of the project.
Qualifications & Experience:

Minimum Diploma in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or Construction, with major component of Water & Sanitation.
Minimum 3 years experience as a construction supervisor in the Water & Sanitation sector
Specific experience in the construction of sanitation facilities in rural communities.
Good knowledge of rain water harvesting technologies and other rural water supply solutions.
Excellent computer skills. Knowledge of Auto-CAD is desirable.
Proven ability to work in a team.
Fluent written and verbal English and Kiswahili language skills.
Hygiene Educator- 1 Person

Position Summary:

The role of this position is to promote good hygiene practices amongst school children through the implementation of an effective hygiene education programme in the targeted schools.

This is a full time contract position for one year, renewable based on performance. The position is based at our Territorial Headquarters in Karen, Nairobi, and will involve travel to rural areas approximately 70% of the time.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist the project manager in conducting baseline surveys in the schools that participate in the project, in order to evaluate hygiene practices and identify current water and sanitation concerns, and for use in future monitoring and evaluation of the project.
Design an effective hygiene education programme for the participating schools that promotes good personal and environmental hygiene to protect the health of pupils, staff and the community.
Facilitate the delivery of the hygiene education programme at the school level, ensuring effective participation by students and staff. Conduct scheduled monitoring visits to participating school to assess the effectiveness of the hygiene education programme and lessons learnt
Compile and submit regular monitoring reports on the outcome of all hygiene education activities to the project manager.
Ensure proper record keeping in line with the means of verification of the logical frame work in the project document.
Assist the Project Manager in the preparation of quarterly / annual activity and financial reports
Other duties as may be required within the scope of the project.
Qualifications & Experience:

Minimum Diploma qualification in Public Health or Environmental Health from a recognized institution.
Minimum 3 years experience as a hygiene educator.
Specific experience in the design and delivery of hygiene education and promotion programmes to primary school aged children using PHAST and child -to-child methodologies.
Excellent computer skills - MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Internet.
Proven ability to work in a team.
Fluent written and verbal English and Kiswahili language skills.
