Hearing the news of the grotesque bus massacre of 45 Ismaillis at Safoora Chowrangi Karachi on our news channels, even a common man of Pakistan is compelled to brood over the fact that Pakistan's next door adversary's Research Analysis Wing (RAW) has an ingrained nexus in the country.
Many are claiming that this could have been a response to the auspicious chapter of massive development that will be ushered in by the starting an economic corridor in Pakistan soon. What might previously have been regarded as frantic suspicions are now said to progress with the case of Ravindra Kaushik alias Nabi Ahmed substantiating the piercing reality.
In recent news, trained as a resident agent, Ravindra Kaushik was assigned to go to Pakistan for espionage. Originally from Jaipur Rajasthan, the RAW operative managed to infiltrate the Pakistan army. To camouflage his identity, he took steps to be eyed as one of them; he learnt Urdu, graduated in law and got married in Pakistan.
However, in 1983, due to a slip up from another RAW agent, Inyat Masiha, Kaushik's cover was blown, leading to his arrest and interrogation in Sialkot. He was convicted and initially sentenced to death, but later the punishment was changed to life imprisonment. He died of a heart disease and tuberculosis at the Mianwali jail in 2001.
This turned out to be one of the incidents that depreciated the ancient rivalry between the two countries. While he was exposed of machination in Pakistan, the Indian media hailed Kaushik as an unsung hero of the nation and highlighted how his family's please to the Indian government weren't paid much heed to. They claimed that the government could have pressed for the agent's release from Pakistan, had the Indian government taken up the matter with the Pakistani foreign ministry. Many claim that this incident would have been a gesture of owning the agent, and therefore did not transpire.
Recently, an ISPR statement in a meeting of the Corps Com-manders was issued, where the involvement of RAW in promoting terrorism in Pakistan was discussed seriously. It was said that it is possible that many operatives akin to Ravindra Kaushik are still sprawled across Pakistan, working even more aggressively and with greater vile intent to promote terrorism. It was further discussed that allies of RAW are not confined to a single section of our society, and can be found anywhere. The government says that these actions from India are not targeted against any specific political party, but are aimed at terrorism in general, and that greater measures will be taken to inhibit them.
This also doesn't mean we plunge into a fit of paranoia, and repeat the "McCarthyism" era in our country. The security apparatus of Pakistan desperately needs to be overhauled and equipped in order to prove itself to be a nemesis for such agents and to unearth all conspiracies. The army also reinforced the need to cleanse support for RAW, even if it is in Pakistani media.
For the population of Pakistan, it is imperative to stand as opera bystanders and help settle the situation in our country. Many believe that this can only be done if ethnic and sectarian differences aside are put aside to deal with this menace and those pulling its strings once and for all.
It is high time that this matter be dealt with; Pakistan can't wait for another ambush and repeat the cycle of mourning for a few days until this issue falls on the deaf ears.
